Is there anyone on here with a Pekingese dog? If so can you give me any info on it? Does it sneeze a lot where it has a flat face? Temperment? Good with kids? anything you can come up with. Thanks.

I have found pekingese puppies to be incredibly sweet. My mom has had a few of them over the years. She fed them cottage cheese to keep their coat nice.

My Grandma had Pekingese dogs. One was very sweet, one was snippy. They are so cute and have a lot of personality!

The few pekingese I have known have been kinda snippy, they definitely need to be socialized properly.

"Smooshed-nose" dogs are prone to certain breathing problems so you want to be careful of that.

In addition little/toy dogs (like the pekingese) should be watched carefully around kids who may not know how to properly play/interact with them, they could easily get seriously hurt.

If you are considering adding this breed to your family, I would suggest you check out these links for information:

We have one! She's a GREAT dog. She's never been aggressive. We really love her and I couldn't imagine not having a Pekingese in my life now. If you want to know anything let me know.

Here's my girl out in the snow earlier this year

She's an albino peke. We got her from a lady in Minnesota who rescues albino pekes because they are often killed at birth because they cannot be shown in the AKC.

I will also say that there is grooming required because of the long hair. But that is all worth it to me because she's such a sweet dog.

Im glad you got her. She is a beautiful dog. The one we are thinking about is a cream colored little boy about 8 weeks old. We're supposed to go get him Saturday so im trying to get all the info on them that I can. We have a 2 year old and a Yorkie in our home so im hoping that he will fit in nicely with us.

Thanks. I think he'll be fine. Mine has always gotten along well with our other dogs. If you take him to a groomer, make sure they don't put him in a drying cage because it can kill them because of their snub nose. I think most groomers know this though (every one we've went to has). Good luck!

Just out of curiosity though. How can putting one in a cage dryer kill him?

I think it can collapse their trachea (I think that is what the groomer said). I have seen people whose pekes have died from the drying cages on news programs.

Thanks a bunch, I didnt know that. I will remember it though. Now do you all have any good ideas for a name? LOL :confused3

We have a Peke(Max) He is 12 now, we got him when he was 8 weeks old and cold fit in your shirt pocket. We also have a Golden Retreiver - they both get along great.

Our Peke has been one of the easiest dogs ever. He has never chewed on anything he was not supposed to chew on and he never barks (unless you accidentally step on him then he kind of quacks). Our's is a big baby and does not like cold weather. So, he will run outside and do his stuff and be back in within 15 seconds. He is a big wimp. He also never leaves the yard (our yard is not fenced in all the way) and both dogs just hang out in the back.

We also have 2 small kids (they are 9 and 6 now). Max is really good with the kids but he does not like being picked up by kids. We let kids pet him but they are not allowed to pick him up. I think he feels insecure with their little hands. My 6 year old is fearless though and has started to pick him up and he has been fine. ( He also knows that if he snaps he is in trouble and will go into a time-out. Yes both of our dogs will sit in the corner til we say they can come out - it is very funny). He has snipped a few times when kids have cornered him - so, just be careful when kids are around. (even if he did bite it would feel like a mosquito bite).

He has been a great dog, but loves his treats. Everytime he comes inside from going potty he thinks he should have a treat and he will sit and dance under the fridge til he gets one (the treats are stored on top of the fridge). He has been very low maintenance and I would get one again in a heartbeat.

I have a 6 month old peke who I adore. She is full of personality and she LOVES to play. She is not really a lap dog meaning she will sit on the couch beside me but she does not want to sit in my lap. She is quite independent. She does sneeze but usually only after she has sniffed at the grass (meaning shoved her nose in it) when she is outside rolling in it..lol. She barks at the door when someone knocks on it but otherwise she doesn't bark much, oh and she also barks when she wants someone to play with her. She does NOT like people to come up behind her when we are out walking and will growl if people try to pet her by coming up behind her. Her and my boys do fine together, BUT she will growl at my 2 year old when she has had enough of him being a two year old. She too loves her treats.

As far as names go well mine is named Annie because my two year old's favorite show is Little Einsteins and his brothers decided to name her that after one of the characters on the show. It definitely suits her.

Oh and I forgot too mention, she started off as a foster and we decided to adopt her, well, my friend is currently fostering a number of dogs so to help her out I am picking up a yorkie pup in a week. I take my peke over to her house quite a bit and she loves going over there to play with the other dogs.

This is what my ASPCA dog book says.......

Peks are playful and very loyal. Some Peks are stubborn and independent, making obedience training a challenge. They are cautious of strangers and are not fond of children under about ten. While they can be aloof or aggressive with other dos, they are usually good with cats. They can be alarm barkers, alerting the household when visitors arrive. Pekingese are suited for apartment life, especially with an adult household.

My grandmother had one when I was a kid. It was down right nasty, but it was not socialized properly. She also babysat a pekingese and he was not friendly either. Again, probably not socialized well.

We have a 4 year old miniature pekinese who we all adore. He will nip at our 6 year old DD when she gets too rough with him, but he has never broken the skin. Before he does that he will try and get away from her and if she continues to pursue him he will growl before he will nip her.
