So, I have NEVER eaten shrimp that wasn't already peeled! We are going to 'Ohana during our upcoming trip, and I'm leaning towards just not having shrimp because the prospect of peeling it is freaking me out.

So, help me out here. How do you peel a shrimp? Does the shell come off easily? Is it a big project? Do the shrimp still have little faces when they come to the table? (That was my experience several years ago in the Domincan Republic. Yikes!)

They are very easy to peel - they usually slide right off - and no faces. They are delicious :)

The faces are cut off for you in advance so no worries there. I found them quite easy to peel off the last time I was at Ohana. I normally don't eat many because who wants to peel and clean shrimp? The outer shell came off quite easy all you have to do is take off the tail and enjoy! You'll be fine. :)

They are pretty easy to peel, don't have faces, but they are not deveined and that totally grosses us out.

I am so with you on this!!! I love shrimp and will buy them uncooked to prepare at home BUT that dark vein is nasty to deal with:scared:

OP---buy a few at the supermarket to "practice" the peel.:thumbsup2

Yuck i hate that they arent deveined, i love shrimp but i will definelty pass on the ones at ohana bc of that gross little vein :scared:

They don't have heads but they usually have all those little feet on them. But they are delicious and worth all that work. :)

  1. Pinch a bunch of those little leggies on the underbelly and pull. This usually opens the shell up for you.
  2. Grab the meat right about where the head used to attatch and pull it down and out of the shell.
  3. Break it off where it meets the tail.
  4. Run the blunt end of a knife or the side of a fork along the back of the meat to separate and remove the mud vein.
  5. Dip in cocktail sauce and try not to think how long it will take to get full doing this.

I have been eating peel and eat shrimp since I was 5 - it is super easy to peel them and they arrive with the heads already chopped off so you don't have to mess with them. ;) You will love it - it's not gross at all!

Oh ... it's a little gross. I mean, I do it, but let's not kid ourselves. We're tearing a little creature apart with our bare hands and eating them.

I like to pretend that the shrimp that get served have been convicted in a court of shrimp-law of something heinous and sentenced to be eaten by giant land-walkers. Then at least I'm serving a purpose.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm good with most of this but not sure about that vein. blech!
