My daughter is having a birthday next week and I am going to send in a snack for the class, but one girl has a peanut allergy I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good snack (cookies or cupcakes etc) that would be ok for her to eat. The teacher told me that some of the other parents didn't do this and she could not participate in the celebration and I don't want to leave her out. Thank you for your help

It really depends on the severity of the allergy. Even if you did bring something in for the little one, the school probably still wouldn't let her have it. It's a liability for them.

Every time this question is posed on this board....someone responds with this...(It's my turn this time)

Call her parents! They can tell you what is safe, or maybe they'll send in a special treat for her.

If you don't know who it is....and you want to send it one general treat....you could always do fruit or something like that. (At my twins' school, we do "nutritional" and nut-free/peanut-free snacks like popcorn, fruit muffins, fruit skewers/shishkabobs - these are really popular with the kids!)

If her mom is anything like I was, she won't be allowed to eat ANYTHING that is home-made. I'd call the teacher and ask if they are taking extraordinary measures or if you can just send in any old thing.

Charlene....just noticed it was you! Only one DD is having a b-day next week?! :rotfl2: How'd you work that one....are they that desperate for separate b-days? (Mine wanted their own parties this year....nope, they both wanted to do it up big so they had to share).

I usually ask the parents but honestly I think the parent of a child with food allergies should do what my friend did and HAVE a stash of safe snacks in the classroom that can be given to their child when the others have a party. Among the allergies that my friends daughter had was dairy so when other kids came in with ice cream for their birthdays the teacher would send 2 kids to the teachers lounge nad get an ice pop that my friend provided and she could have that so it wasn't like she was missing out on the party. She also had packages of other safe food so if they had cupcakes she could have something. If my child had a peanut allergy I would not leave it up to anyone else to check what was safe and what was not, I would have something in that classroom myself that they could have for my own piece of mind!

Our school has a very limited list of what is acceptable to send. One of the things on the list is Rice Krispy Treats. I make them adding food coloring to the marshmallow, then cut them out with cookie cutters, to make them a little bit more festive.

Kari - I didn't realize you also have twins :) They are in seperate classes at school and only one class has the peanut allergy. They actually have never asked for seperate b-day parties they think they have no other choice so we will keep it that way as long as I can

I have had the school nurse call me to see if a certain treat was ok for my daughter to eat. Perhaps she could be your go-between, or she could call the other parent and give her your phone # (with your permission). Might be a little more reliable, if this little one is as (non)reliable as my daughter!

Take clear plastic cups, add blue jello, and use a gummy dolphin half in and half out jumping out of the "water" at the top. Kids love it, and it's peanut free. Don't forget the plastic spoons.
