Hi there,
I thought I would post here just in case anyone with a peanut allergy has had experience at a TBRays game... Our son is anaphylactic to peanuts (only - ingestion) and DH has his heart set on taking his little boy to a ball game next month...:cool2:
I'm a bit worried about the availablilty of peanuts, shells around , residue etc...
The allergy is ingestion only as far as we know, but he has never had a whole lot of exposure...

Any experience/words of wisdom on this one ? :confused3

We haven't been to that park but, if you've done other parks, you probably know it can be hit or miss. If no one around you is eating peanuts and/or it is not crowded and you can move to another section - then you're ok. Otherwise...it is really difficult. We resorted to paying for club level seats last year in our hometown park just so we had more space options (the clubhouse had nice seating and you could see the game - or you could go outside to your seat - few people there ate peanuts).

If he is really young and might be of an age to pick up shells - I wouldn't take him. There definitely are shells. Don't have him wear sandals. Long pants and long sleeve shirt if he is touch allergic are a possibility if he will tolerate it.

my son is anaphylactic to peanuts and tree nuts and has been attending baseball games all his life... i do a quick wipe down of his seats (just like i do on an airplane, movie theatre, etc) and then keep a sharp eye on the people around us... the "most important" people to watch are the people behind you, as they may have a wayward shell... if you are selecting your own seats from a seating chart, the last row in any section is your best bet... also, our stadium has extra seats behind the last row w/space between them for wheelchairs, which are often unused, we have been allowed to sit there for safety reasons...

Thanks for taking the time to post. He has actually never been to a game, and we've only been in Toronto where the shelled peanuts were not as popular.
There is no MLB/NHL etc where we live. :3dglasses
I'll just take the usual precautions with wiping his seat / arm rests etc, and the tip about the sandals and long pants was excellent.
Thanks again...

At the trop? Well, if it make you feel better, All Children's is pretty much across the street!
Yeah, there are nuts.

Please dont go based on another poster not having a issue. The truth is some people are more allergic than others and with a peanut allergy inparticular each exposure causes a more severe reaction. Some people can have a full blown anaphalaxis with just being in a room where a peanut butter jar is opened or touching the slightest residue.

If you go just be careful and prepared. Bring your Epi-Pen and have a plan just in case. I wouldnt care how it looked I would also bring a cheap plastic table cloth or a cheaop shower curtain to lay out over your area. I also wouldnt hesitate to contact the venue ahead of time and ask for a special area to be reserved as peanut free. Its becomming more commonplace now.

Dont know if this will help but if you search for PN free baseball games you can pull all sorts of stuff up. Here is a link that lists some PN free games in Canada and America. I hope it helps!

Funny thing I was just talking to a mom about this very thing today! Her son went to a baseball game and her PN detecting service dog went into a mad alert and basically pushed them out of the way. Something she never did before. She normally just points. Turns out she smelled the broken up shells on the ground before they even saw them. They left right away to be safe.

If you are CERTAIN your child is allergic to ingestion only of peanuts - then a baseball game is as safe as anywhere as long as you are careful about the food from the stands - I didn't notice the "ingestion only" in your original post. My son has reactions from touching it (not smell).

I think you have to establish your own comfort zone as to how many precautions you think necessary to take.:thumbsup2

Thank you for taking the time to post. Oh yes,I will make my own assessment when we get there. As far as we know, he is ingestion only. Before his diagnosis he was certainly exposed here at home to smell/touch via his siblings eating pb when he was a toddler.
I will call the venue to see if we can have our area designated PF. He should be fine otherwise. Appreciate everyone's input.popcorn::
PS Where I live, we do have peanut free schools and daycares. It is a great blessing :littleangel:

Also, the Trop allows outside food and drink, just make sure that drinks are sealed and orange juice is not allowed.

This way you can also control things more.

Ball games are scary places for Peanut allergy kids. We do take DGS but I am never relaxed there. Peanut shells can be everywhere. He is ingestion only allergic so we are a little safer than some. The biggest problem we have found is people "tossing" the shells! They can really fly around!! Wipe down everything, wipe hands every little bit. Be sure he does not touch the ground or his shoes that touch the ground. If someone around you is eating peanuts, a very polite,"do you mind being careful not to toss shells our way, DS is allergic", is certainly fine and we have "ALWAYS had positive result and we go to a lot of games. At the local football stadium, we have season passes and most people around us have also had them a long time and some are aware of DGS allergy and refrain from peanuts. SO HELPFUL.
