Peanut Allergies and Buffets

We're going with friends and one of their little ones has a peanut allergy. We are doing a couple of breakfast buffets and wondered about what type of information we can get at the restaurant from the kitchen staff. I read somewhere that chefs often come out and talk to people with these types of issues to let you know what food is safe for your situation, etc. Should we call the restaurant beforehand, or should we alert Disney Dining at the main ADR number so they flag the ressies somehow. What is the best way to approach this?

What have others done?

TIA

We went to WDW in April '07 for the first time with the kids. My second dd has several food allergies, peanuts, milk, and eggs. I was very impressed on how they were handled. First of all make sure it is noted on each seperate ADR. The reservation CM should then give you a phone number to each resturant that you can call 24 hours before eating there to go over things. Make sure to point it out when you sit down... the chef always came out and told us what was safe and what wasn't. They also tried to make her different things that could be altered to take out the ingredient especially for her. Again I was very impressed... but make sure you get it on all those ADR's and mention it at check in!! Have a great trip!!

Thanks for the help. We're going in a couple of weeks, so we'll call today to note it on the ADRs, and we'll get the restaurant phone numbers to call 24 hours ahead.

Thanks again.

We were just there a few weeks ago with our peanut allergic dd. Disney is great with food allergies! I had it noted on all our ADR's that there was a peanut allergy. At checkin, the host/hostess confirmed there was an allergy and said the chef would be out to talk to us. At Akershus, the chef walked with me through the buffet and since there were peanut items, she got a fresh plate of items from the kitchen for my daughter. Chef Mickeys...there was a peanut butter pizza that was next to the mickey waffles which my dd wanted, so the chef made fresh mickey waffles and brought them straight from the kitchen so there was no cross contamination issue. At CRT, my dd wanted the hot dog and the bun was off limits, so the chef brought out 2 hot dogs for her. I was very impressed with how Disney handles food allergies!

Ditto to what as already been said, but we prefer to have our DS's plate made in the back when we go to the buffets to avoid cross-contamination (allergies to peanuts, eggs and shellfish). The chefs are great and are always happy to do it, do not feel shy about asking if this would make you feel more comfortable. We've made 14 trips in 7 years and only had one incident (at a buffet, actually).

They do a great job there, no worries!

1) This is an excellent decision.
2) There is NO WAY to stop contamination on a buffet.
3) Plus, the child could easily grab something to which they are allergic.
