We bought a Dell in Jan and love it, but DH and I really hate the WordPerfect Office on it! DH has school and wants the old writing program we had on our Gateway. I can't remember what it was called though! I want to say Microsoft Word/Works, but I am not sure if that is right. Anyone familiar with the program that came with Gateway?

If that is it and I have the programming on disc from my Gateway can I download it on the Dell?

I have a Gateway we purchased in 1998 that came with Home Essentials 98. The cd has Word 97 and Works 4.5.

ETA Not sure if you'll be able to load your "old" version with the new computers now having different versions of Windows. But you can try.

Probably not. Those disks are often set up to only unpack and restore software in a specific way for the machine you got it with. My guess is that any given PC can be bundled with any package. The Dell I recently got had MS Works on it - though I installed MS Office XP on it as soon as I got it.

It's most likely MS Works. If you have the original MS CDs, you should have no trouble installing it on the new PC. Sometimes, manufacturers only provide 'recovery' disks. They may not allow a re-install.

Do they sell the program disc? If so what do I look for to buy (what would be the name) and where could I find it. (I know this is a dumb question but I have never bought anything for the computer since it came with everything). I appreciate the help since DH is having a really hard time with his term papers right now due to the new program.

I am not sure if it is the original disc, if I try to install it to check will it mess anything up ?

If it is a "recovery" disk then it could very well mess things up. If it is just an MS Works install disk you may be OK.

I would go to openoffice.org and just download openoffice. It's fairly similar to MS Word but since it's open source it's free.

I have openoffice at home and it totally compatible with Word docs. I'd would use that instead of messing around with old install discs.

If it is a Gateway disc, I would not try it. If it is obviously an original Microsoft disc, you are safe. Just insert the disc and follow the default prompts.

Ok since I don't want to use the disc I have, I want to buy one. What do I look for? The disc says Microsoft Works/Word Suite 2001. Do I just go to the Dell website and search for that? I want to make sure I get the right software. Thanks!

This is the same set of discs I have that these people are selling. Is this a reinstall? Would it work on my PC?

Just go to any store that sells computer software and buy Microsoft Office or Works with word. If your dh is a student he should be able to get a heafty discount through his school bookstore. I know ours carried the Student and Teachers version of Office which I'm sure comes with Microsoft Word.

Ok, the only software store here is Office Max. Do I ust ask for Microsoft Works with Word? I don't want all the other things that come with the Works Suite like the encyclopedia, streets and all that just the Microsoft Works and Word. Do they sell just those? I tried to search it and Dell wants almost 100. for the entire suite. I don't want to pay that much when I don't need most of the programs.

There is a MS Works 8.0 at Office Max for $50.00 but honestly I think you should download openoffice first. See if DH can use that. If he can, you just saved yourself $50. If it doesn't then you can easily uninstall it and buy the MS Works.

I looked on the site and what one do you download? The stable or the beta? Forgive me, but I am one step above computer illiterate LOL.
