After reading all I could here about selling on ebay I decided to try it. I had made purchases on ebay before so I had a paypal account, I assumed it was just the regular kind. Well today I made my first sale and the winning bidder paid immediatly. When I looked at the details on the paypal site there was a .49 fee. The total was 6.50 so I'm assuming the .49 is the .30 plus 2.9%. Anyway I'm just wondering how my account turned into a merchant account that can take credit cards. Could it be because I got the paypal debit card? Also I would like to revise my other auction listings to state that I can take credit cards but I don't think I can because they already have bids. TIA for any imput.

I believe that the regular accounts don't accept credit card payments, only bank transfers. Your buyer probably paid with a credit card.

You can't have the PayPal debit card without being a Premier account holder with PayPal. If you signed up for the debit card you switched from the no-fee Personal account to the Premier account that charges a fee for each payment received.

I believe you are allowed to revert the account to a personal account. I would check into that, if you do not want to pay the fees.

I would have probably switched to a premier account if a buyer asked or tried to use a credit card. I just wonder if I might have gotten more bids if my auctions stated that I took credit cards? Does anyone know how the 1.5% cash back works, do you get it at the end of the month?

I just found the answer to my own question when I activated my debit card. The email they sent me said that the 1.5% cash back was immediate, and that you have to use it to make purchases not requiring a pin number to get it. Since I might have switched anyway I'll just think of it as saving half of the percent that paypal gets. Does that make sense?

You can still add that you accept credit cards in your listings. You go into the listing and click edit listing at the top of the page. It will not let you change anything, but you can make a note of it at the bottom of the auction. Good luck~KPmom

I would go in to the auctions (even those that have bids) and add that you accept credit cards. If there are bids (or it is less then 12 hours before closing) you can simply add this information to the auction. If there are no bids (and it is more then 12 hours before closing) you can change any language you may have in there that states you do not accept credit cards.

Thanks for the great advice. The auctions just ended and I think they did well. I did better with the auctions that ended today than the ones that ended yesterday. I didn't get to add the note about accepting cc but at least I know better now.

As an Ebay buyer, I can say this might very well be true. I usually don't bid on anything that doesn't allow me to pay with CC. Too much hassle to go get a money order, mail it, wait for it to arrive and then wait on item to be shipped. And as an Ebay seller, I like the CC option too. Allows me to receive payment immediately, and then transfer directly to bank account, worth every penny of the fee.

This is a big NO NO and it will get your auction cancelled by Ebay. You can however, "hide" the fee in with your s/h but then everyone pays.

Also you can have two paypal accounts, one for cash only transactions and one for credit card only transactions. To do this you need to seperate checking accounts and two seperate email accounts.
