I never believe any email I get that is a suppossed security email from Paypal. Today I got this:

As a security measure, we regularly screen PayPal activity. Recently, we noticed a problem with your account. We have reason to believe that your account was accessed by a third party. We have limited access to sensitive PayPal account features in case your account has been accessed by an unauthorized third party. We understand that having limited access can be an inconvenience, but protecting youraccount is our primary concern. Case ID Number: PP-XXX-XXX-XXX. We've limited access to your account temporarily. We'll review thelimitation once you respond with the information we've requested. To respond and remove the limitation, go to the Resolution Center. If you'd like clarification on the limitation, please let us know by going to theHelp Center and clicking Contact Us. Thank you for helping to resolve this problem. Sincerely,PayPal Account Review Department Please do not reply to this email. This mailbox is not monitored and you will not receive a response. For assistance, log in to your PayPal accountand click the Help link in the top right corner of any PayPal page. PayPal Email ID PPXXX (I replaced the real case numbers with XXX's in case they really stand for something.)
I immediately ignored it, didn't go to Paypal from the email message, etc. Later, I logged into Paypal directly on another computer and when I logged into my account got this message:

We are currently performing regular maintenance of our security measures. Your account has been randomly selected for this maintenance, and you will now be taken through a series of identity verification pages.

Protecting the security of your PayPal account is our primary concern, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

It then listed the last four digits of my bank account and Visa card on file with them and asked me to type in the full number for each account to verify them. I would NEVER believe this to be legit in an email, but this came up after I logged into the Paypal site.

Well, this sounds legit to me, since it's not telling you to click a link, or reply with confidential information. Since I assume you opened your web browser and typed in PayPal's URL yourself (instead of clicking a link in that e-mail) you're probably OK. But, you can never be too careful, so I would call PayPal. Their number is 1-888-221-1161 - but I encourage you to verify this via their website (like I said, you can't be too careful). :goodvibes

There are several PayPal scams-If the email is not addressed to you by name, it is not legit. I would log into your account then check your messages and payment options. Sounds fishy to me

before u do!!!
close ur browser
open a fresh one then u go to paypal..
incase its a phish email

Just call Paypal. They'll let you know.

They are great. Last year someone used one of my credit cards to charge something and they cross referenced the card number to me and called me to verify the charge because it came from a "vendor" that was known to scam.

I then got an email about it from them, too. But they called me first and didn't let the charge go through them. I thought it was a scam at first, but it wasn't. They have a whole department that works on fraud.

My credit card company on the other hand....I called them after I heard from paypal and checked my online activity to see there was another pending transaction that wasn't me.....took me weeks to get them to reverse it.

I had to get new cards. Could have been worse.

A few years ago I received an e-mail from PayPal.

It was addressed to my by my full registered name. It gave the last 4 digits of my credit card, and told me the card had expired.

It told me to log into my account as I normally would and then where to go.

It did not have any link at all in the e-mail.

When I logged in and went to my account information I saw that the CC had expired and all I needed to do was put in the new expiration date.

Key items - Addressed by name, no links in e-mail, did show partial account information.

yes, i have been the recipient of many paypal phishing emails. usually, the misspelling of words or bad grammar gives it away, but they are getting sneakier!

The OP did state "Later, I logged into Paypal directly on another computer and when I logged into my account got this message". Different computer entirely was used, and the message in her/his account stated that s/he needed to go through security measures.

I would first forward this to spoof@paypal.com. They will tell you if it's fake.
Then I would go into PayPal by your normal method and check your accout.
