I'm new to PayPal and need advice on how it works. I've just opened an account and added my bank account information. Now I have some questions that I hope you can answer for me.

  • If I'm selling something from my home to someone how does the buyer send the money to my account?
  • What information do I need to provide the buyer to ensure the funds are sent to the correct PayPal account?
  • What if any information do I need from the buyer?
  • How is shipping included in the cost if you're shipping it from your home?

Thanks

You only need to give the Buyer the email address you used to set up the PayPal account. They log in to Paypal, insert your address and PayPal takes them through the rest of the process. It then goes to your PayPal account.

Later, you can transfer the money to your bank account or leave a little in your PayPal account.

You should figure out the shipping costs and add on shipping to the total amount and tell the Buyer before they agree to buy, and before the send the funds.

When you say, "selling something from my home" do you mean over the Internet? From eBay, etsy, or Craigslist? From your own website or blog? Or have you talked to this person before in person and they are buying directly from you and just paying for it through PayPal?

If you have a webpage, you can set it up with a link directly to your PayPal account. If you are using eBay, you can have it set up to have PayPal as a form of payment. Then it takes the Buyer through the paying process.

If you are shipping/mailing the item, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use some sort of delivery tracking. That is your proof to PayPal that you actually sent the item.

The buyer's bank account or charge card is linked to their PayPal account. If they are paying for an ebay item, ebay automatically adds the shipping total you've specified on your listing to the final item total, and bills them for the total amount (you can adjust your invoice amount if you're doing a shipping discount, say, but the final amount on your invoice is what they pay). Then it goes through your ebay account for the info on where to send the money. If you are billing someone for something not on ebay, you provide your email address (the one attached to your account), and that's all you give them. They go to PayPal, click on "send money," enter your email address, and pay. The money goes to your PayPal account and is held there (minus the PP fees) until you withdraw it, either by having it put on your PP debit card or transferring to your account. Your buyer never sees your bank account information. If you're shipping something from your home, you just include whatever amount you've agreed on for shipping to your total.

I've received payments from both ebay buyers and non-ebay (it's also been a convenient way for my SIL and I to send money back and forth to each other when we don't want to mail a check). I've never had a problem, and it's worked out well.

Yes, in case both of us weren't clear: YOU have to figure out how much shipping you want. If you don't state it on your eBay page, people won't know how much it is, or may assume it's included already.
