anyone know how it works...?

i made a payment that has been charged to my account( cleared, not pending) since the 14th but they still have it as pending "clearing" on the pay pal site and with the seller...which means, 4 days later, they supposedly still haven't shipped nor received the money from pay pal? truthfully i could have mailed a check faster than that.
why do they say it takes 4 days when it goes through my bank by the next day? does it go back through paypal again or something after my bank clears it?
amazon on the other hand already shipped what i bought today and it hasn't even shown up on the pending part of my bank account

Well it depends on the seller, but here is what "maybe" happening.

1. Paypal takes your money, so it does not show as Pending with your bank.
2. Seller has not recieved it from Paypal, so it could be Pending on their side.

There could be many reasons, if you are a newish/unverified Paypal user they may impose a waiting period, Paypal has been subject to very many scams that turn up after product has changed hands and they are out of the money.

But you can not give them(seller) very much time, cuz after a set amount of days it is too late to complain to Paypal.

I would say that if Paypal shows it as Pending, the seller has not recieved the money.
If paypal shows the money as recieved by the seller with the seller claiming it is pending, THAT WOULD BE ODD.

paypal's always giving me problems, takes ages to go through payments, specially big sums of money.
they tend to take longer

it also depends on the type of funding. If you have a cash balance the transfer goes much quicker. When I request an electronic transfer of funds from my checking to my paypal (not connected with a sale) it takes four days!!! But lately when we have been paying for auctions and the paypal balance is to low it will take the difference from my checking immediately....?

Two things:

1.) Communication is essential. email the seller, tell them you have sent money via paypal and are waiting for the transaction to complete. Also include the email address that you sent it to, so they can double check that.

2.) You will soon recieve emails weekly. They will say that your account has been flagged and will be suspended until you click the link in the email and verify your personal information. Never Never Never!!! Paypal, and all other sites, already have your info! I don't even bother reporting those emails to paypal anymore. There are just too many. Hover over the link in the email, right click and choose properties (do not left click the link). It will say something like Info@ paypal.aw(^*()#@!$()HFK{burp{sally@yahoo.bs Definately not a paypal domain.....

I get the same phishing emails pretending to be my chase bank. One was from a hotmail domain. Hmmmmmm, I thought Chase bank was big enough to have their own domain?...
