Paying off trip with gift cards

If you pay your trip off with gift cards and then some crazy thing comes up and you have to cancel, how do you get refunded? Do they just send you a check or put it back on gift cards? Just wondering worst case scenario before I got that route...

I have read on these boards that they put it back on the cards.

we paid off our package using Disney gift cards... we were instructed to keep the gift cards used, in the event of a refund, they will apply $$ back onto the gift cards... Enjoy your vacation...
