We are going to be at WDW from December 20-25. I've got the Unofficial Guide and have been studying the touring plans. I've seen some online recommendations for getting custom touring plans, especially during busy holiday times. The 2 places I know of are www.touringplans.com and www.tourguidemike.com.

Has anyone used these? Is it worth it? I'm not made of money, but if it will truely save as much time as they claim, then it's probably a good thing to do.

Any thought?

Thanks,

I wholeheartedly recommend tourguidemike!!! We were there last year over Christmas/New Years week and though it was THE HIGHEST attendance ever at WDW, we used his advice and didn't wait more tha 15 minutes for anything. We also got a front row seat for Spectro about 15 minutes before it started, a great spot for Illuminations without waiting around forever for it.

TGM is much more than just a touring plan. His holiday week survival guide is second to none and contrary to what some others may think, it has tips you aren't going to find on message boards for free. The best tips for our Christmas trip last year were the ones that were in direct contradiction to what is recommended in other books and on the boards. His least crowded parks per day information is, to me, worth the purchase price! That made such a huge difference and the insight he puts into it is so much more than just a "go to the EMH every day" or "skip the EMH parks and go the day after their EMH." I'm not sure if touringplans.com adjusts their strategy for Christmas week or not, I never checked into that but I like knowing that TGM's information is geared towards that particular week, not just your average week in the parks where attendance is 1/3 the level of holiday weeks. There is also a specific write up for each attraction with special info for people touring with kids or for guests with special needs etc.

I've said before that I don't believe there is only one possible way to avoid the crowds so that means that more than one type of planner is going to give good results. I think a lot of it will depend on what type of group you have going and what they want to accomplish. Touringplans.com creates your plans using a computer algorithm to figure out what the best order of rides will be to minimize your wait time based on the list of attractions you wish to see. Because it's a computer figuring it out, it doesn't take things like the temperment of a 4 year old into account. If you have a group with mostly adults and older kids that's not a problem and it may suit you perfectly. If you have toddlers and preschoolers, it may feel too "comando-ish" and have you doing more running around than you would like. That's the spot I'm in (I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 4 year old) and I know we have to be more flexible so TGM is a great fit for me. I can use his information for a day with kids or a day combining kids and adult attractions and know that this is a plan he's done personally in the parks with countless families and young kids. I like that it's planned by a person and that the plan will not only tell me the best time to ride Goofy's Barnstormer but can warn me that the noise it makes might scare my child while he's waiting to get on AND give me advice on how to keep him from feeling scared (worked like a charm too!). I love that it includes neat information that enhances my trip. I was able to point out something neat in Spectro that most people miss to a friend who is a certifiable disney nut on our last trip. She had never noticed it and kept saying "that is SO cool! I never noticed that before! How cool is that!" Would we have enjoyed spectro without that info? sure but it's still neat to notice! I love that he explains WHY he recommends things the way he does. That lets me customize exactly what I want and if we get off track because my kids see something they HAVE to do even though it's not on our list, we're fine. Our plans are still good because we have been armed with more info than just a list of attractions and the order to see them. TGM has a chart that lists every attraction at each park and will give you a "best times" recommendation for it so if you want to do it again later or are customizing your plans, you know when to plan to stop by for the shortest wait times.

I can't recommend it any higher. touringplans.com has it's fans too. Either would definitely be helpful during such a busy week, I just feel like TGM gives MORE info for the $. It's so much more than just a touring plan. It's one price for all 4 parks plus the SUPER HELPFUL holiday survival guide. We also find the more laid back and make sure you take the time to appreciate the details approach is a better fit for our family. During our spring trip, a guy DH used to work with was there with his family as well. They have a 3 year old and a 5 year old so their kids are very close in age to ours. We met for dinner one night and were comparing our experiences. They bought plans for touringplans and said that while they did have short wait times if they stuck to the plan, sticking to the plan was causing meltdowns with the kids who didn't want to hear "no, honey, that's not on the list till after lunch so we need to skip it." They felt like it would be great if it was just the two of them but they were not ideal for going with kids.

No matter what you decide, I hope you have a great trip!

Thanks so much for your reply. I tried to sign up with Mike's website last night after I read your review. I think there must be a problem with the site though, because it says my credit card was rejected. I tried both my debit cards (with Visa logo) and neither worked even though I know there is money in both accounts. I also tried my credit card, which has a zero balance, and it was declined. I emailed the address on the site right away, but I have not heard back. It's frusturating because you raved about it so much, and now I want it! LOL. I guess I'm learning patience.

He just did an update to the site last week sometime and apparantly with that update the signup page went offline somehow. He is in California right now because his niece just had some sort of spinal cord/column surgery and his sister needed him for support. Normally he's pretty good about replying quickly to questions and stuff but obviously right now family comes first. He did post on the boards on his site that he just today became aware of the problem and that he notified the technical support/web development people for the hosting company of the problem and they were working on getting it fixed today.

Just wanted you to know that normally you get a quick response to any problems (which are rare) but that he has some "family stuff" going on right now. ;)

I've seen you mention TGM before and he really sounds great. My boys will be almost 3 and almost 5 when we go in June, so eveything you've said seems to fit with what I want. We are also going with my sis and neice(15) and non-thrill-seeking MIL, do you think he can figure something so we can all stick together? Another question: would it be best to wait till closer to the date to order plans? Any idea? Thanks!

I was going to ask the same question. I couldn't get into the site but I was wondering if it would be better to wait a little bit longer. We leave on December 16. How long does it take to deliver the plans?

Just came across this thread and wanted to clarify things for you all. TourGuideMike is a terrific site, but it does not give you customized plans like those from touringplans.com.

With touringplans.com you input all your info...which park, your arrival and/or departure times, your PS info, breaks if you're taking them, and each ride/attraction you want to experience. That information is entered into a computer which analyzes it and then "spits out" a touring plan. It's pretty neat really.

TourGuideMike's site has plenty of sample touring plans (based on Mike's years of experience as a tour guide) that you can use "as is." He also gives you the information and knowledge you need to alter the plans (or create your own) to suit your group, if needed. There are private, members-only forums in case you have any questions.

TGM's plans are designed to minimize time in line, but are still quite leisurely with little backtracking. I like them--a lot.

The TGM site is really a total trip planning tool. If you have any specific questions, please ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability. I'm very familiar with the site.

I have the Unofficial Guide to DisneyWorld. Do you think Tourguidemike is better? Will it have a lot of information not in the book?

I still can't sign up for the site. It's really frusturating because I feel like my planning is stalled. I don't want to waste a bunch of time planning the trip, if the holiday week is so different that I have to replan it!

I have a question about touringplans.com. I tried to ask Len Testa, but I guess he's not monitoring the boards right now. I would like to get these plans, if they can include the special holiday shows & parades at MK, and the holiday activities at Epcot. Will they have this info. to input into my plan, if I tell them I want to see all the shows, etc., but don't actually know what they are, or when they occur? Hope this makes sense. :o TIA :wave2:

Well, it's a matter of opinion I guess. TGM's plans are quite different from the UG's. The UG's plans are designed to fit the most into your time. TGM's plans are designed to fit the "best of" everything in, and if there's time left, then you see the "rest of" if that makes sense. They are less "hectic" and easier to follow, IMO, especially with small children. For example, the UG's Dumbo plan includes everything for the little ones, but if the ages in your party are mixed, then the older ones miss out. TGM's plans for children allow you to see all of Fantasyland and the Mountains too. Maybe for a teen/adult group the UG's plans may be just as good, possibly better depending on your touring style, but I have mixed-age children so I use TGM.

I'm sure it is frustrating, I'm sorry. As I understand it, Mike got back last night so hopefully he'll have things taken care of soon. I haven't been "over there" yet this morning, but when I get there, if I find out anything new, I'll report it here. As far as the holidays, he does have very specific holiday advice. I haven't used it as I go in February, but I've read rave reviews from others who have. Sorry I can't be of any more help in that area, but I haven't any firsthand experience there.

There is an area at the bottom where you can make notes. If you put it there I'm spretty ure they will put it in. I know when I asked if they would use the times guide to schedule shows and such, I was told to note it at the bottom and they would. I don't care for the way the regular plans say "check the daily times guide and work it into your schedule." I don't want to have to "work it in," LOL. Have you tried the emailing to ask them? I would do that before ordering just to be sure you can get exactly what you want. I'm sure there's a "contact us" button on the touringplans.com site.

It looks like the signup problem has been fixed! And for anyone interested in signing up, he has a GREAT deal going on:

During this past week our credit card processing web site was denying almost everyone attempting to purchase an AVP. The problem has been fixed!

To both celebrate AND apologize for the inconvenience I am offering a spectacular deal on the TGMiKE AVP for a very limited time. Use 'Promo Code' HE7LE-8HA on the purchase page and your new AVP is only $12.95!!!

One other thing to clarify is that the touring plans you can get from touringplans.com don't give you advice on what park to visit on what day to avoid the crowds. There is a chart on their site with what park they recommend for what days but it is a general trends chart and does not take into account that things are very different during Christmas week. We've used TGM for 3 trips now and are currently planning our 4th. IMHO, some of THE BEST advice is the way he breaks down the least crowded parks for each morning and evening. This is even more important Christmas week. It's still crowded at the least crowded park, but it's not shoulder to shoulder jam packed can't move crowded like it can get during that week. The only thing I can compare Main Street USA or Fantasy Land mid day on a day when the park was closed at capacity to was being on Bourbon Street Mardi Gras day.

I would send an email through touringplans.com and ask if their computer adjusts the plans for Christmas week. This would be important not just for shows and such but for things like how long they allow for a meal. Even with a PS, your wait time will be a little longer than typical because of so many people. Not horrible, just longer. Also things like that once the MNSSHPs are over, they usually show the Christmas parade AND the Share a Dream Come True parade in the afternoons so it may be something like Christmas Parade at 1:00 and Share a Dream Come True at 4:00 rather than just one parade at 3:00 as on a typical day.

Yes, it is correct that the plans at TGM are not customized as in he does not sit down and write out a plan for you. He has enough sample tour plans that you will more than likely be able to find one to fit your needs thta doesn't need much, if any, tweaking at all. He gives you enough information that it's very easy to customize your own plans as well. I did this for us for AK on our last trip. It was just me and my sons, ages 2 and 4, so we didn't have the option of baby swaping for anything that my 2 year old is too small for. It took me maybe 15-20 minutes to sit down and develop our own plan by starting with reading his sample tour plan and removing what wasn't right for us. I then used the "best times" info to fill in what we wanted to do. In our time there we were the only people on the walking trails so my kids got to get out and move around as well as not fight to see the animals, we rode the safari twice with under 5 minutes wait each time, we rode Triceratops Spin (the dino ride like Dumbo) 5 or 6 times in a row without getting off, saw the characters at Camp Minnie Mickey with no waiting, saw Festival of the Lion King without waiting around outside AT ALL...walked right in to a seat, same with Tarzan Rocks. We also saw an animal training show for Pocohontas and her Forrest Friends, saw Flights of Wonder, rode the train to Planet Watch and did the petting zoo and had lunch. We did not wait in line AT ALL for anything. The only time we waited was for the train to get to the station to go to planet watch. Customizing our plans couldn't have been simpler and it worked perfectly for us. I did something similar for our last day in the MK when we only had the morning and they wanted to hit the "favorites only." Again, no waiting, lots of fun and our own customized plan.

My boys will be almost 3 and almost 5 when we go in June, so eveything you've said seems to fit with what I want. We are also going with my sis and neice(15) and non-thrill-seeking MIL, do you think he can figure something so we can all stick together?

You would be fine with the sample plans he has on his site! Following them would get you through Fantasy Land for the little ones and on the mountains for your neice. We used them last Christmas when we were there with our kids (then 21 months and 3½), my husband and I who wanted to do the moutains, my Father who wanted to do SOME mountains but not all, and my mother who is defintiely non-thrill-seeking and we all had a fabulous time and did everything we wanted to. :)

I have the UG too as well as the Birnbaums book (for the pics, not the planning advice! ;) ) and WDW with kids by Kim Wright Willey. I like them all for different reasons but if I could only pick one planning tool it would be TGM b/c it has the most comprehensive info. Each of them has little tidbits not found in the others but TGM definitely has THE MOST info and it is kept current as Disney makes changes to schedules, puts rides into rehab etc. Books unfortunately just can't do that. TGM has specific info on each and every attraction, lots more than any book I've seen. Sure, you don't need to read every word but it's there if you want to.

::yes:: Yes, I completely agree! At 12.95 it's a steal! Especially when you consider that 12.95 added onto the thousands of dollars you've spent on your vacation doesn't even amount to pocket change in the long run!

I still can't get into the TMG website. I have tried the link at the top of this thread and I have also tried typing it in. Is it my computer?

The TGM Link I have saved in my favorites works for me. The one in the first post doesn't.

I have not seen any of the planning tools other then TGM but he has my vote! I love the fact that I have access to the site from now until out trip in May '06.

I love all the information because I am a planner and will work on my touring plan for the next 17 months.

I will be going with my then 3 and 5 year olds so I am so happy to hear that the touring works.

Happy planning to all!

All I can say, Lollipop Mom, is that you are quite a salesperson. After reading your descriptions, I went right out and signed up for TGM!!!!! I have been to WDW more than a dozen times. I have read UOG, Birnbaum's, WDW with Kids and other books cover to cover. I have been on the Disboards for a while now. Why did I sign up for TGM? Because I have a DD5 and DS4 and we are going to WDW the weeks before and after Easter in 2005. Your description fits exactly with what we want. Thank you for the information!
