Paying for a cruise with points and cash

I'm looking into taking a cruise in January using points for one adult and my DD4 (194 points total). We would pay for the extra adult with cash. My question is, when do I owe the balance on the adult? I forgot to ask when I called. Would it be possible to book 1 adult, 1 child with points, then add the cash ressie later?

Myabe, but I don't think you'll want to do so (because it's not going to be a good deal)

When you pay for some of your party with cash, the cash amount is due in full when you make the reservation. At least one person (adult) must pay with points to book through MS.

The first two people in the cabin have to pay the adult price - whether it be with points or cash. So it won't do much good to add the second adult later, if one of the first two is a child.

Most changes after the reservation are made require payment of another $75 fee - not sure if that would apply to adding another person to the same cabin.

Above is my understanding - be sure to verify with MS when you call back.

Thanks, Carol. I didn't realize DD would be counted as an adult if it was just the two of us, but that makes sense.

Yes, CarolMN is exactly right. It would be better to use points for the two adults and then pay cash for the 4 year old. (She will cost hardly anything)

Good Luck!

If you decide to proceed, simply compare one method to the other. See have many points plus how many dollars if you go through Disney vacation Club compared to the direct costs on cash alone. For most situations you'll find you're getting a return in the 6 to 7 $ per point range and paying more on the cash portion and then that same amount would be directly through the cruise line.

I'm not sure I follow that? Hmmm, but I will say that I've used points for one or more people cruising at least 3 times. I just came back from the med and I think half the ship were DVCers using points in some fashion. I think its a great way to stay with disney and save a few bucks on the cruise. As far as the range $ go...I think it depends on a lot. Some times I found the pp rate to be cheaper going thru DVC. It just depends....but if its a matter of taking the trip or not....the $ ratio doesn't really matter that's the point of owning a timeshare!

Anyone can do what they one with their points. My suggestion was to compare how many points plus cash through the Disney Vacation Club compared to cash alone directly. Because the contract price for the cash portion directly is often than than a fair amount higher than those prices from the cruises self, points plus cash can be worse than either alone. For example, assume the original poster would pay 1000 dollars per person directly compared to 1200 dollars for the cash component and is 150 points through Disney. That further the devalues using points, IMO. This assumes you plan ahead and get the early booking discount, that's why you evaluate each option each time.
