Paying for a cab question.

Never done the cab thing before, but do I have to have cash? Are there any cabs that take credit cards? I hate to carry around a bunch of cash if can avoid it and there may be a day or two we cab it from one thing to another (basically Universal to SW and/or Downtown Disney)?

All Mears cabs accept credit cards. All Universal hotels have Mears cabs on their stands. Sea World also has Mears cabs on the stands for when you return to your resort.

Mears drivers may get cranky about accepting the cards, but just look at the telephone number on the cab, start to call that number and the driver will straighten out fast.

Using a credit card in a crunch is an option which I've used before, but I suggest you plan on having cash for the cab... their credit card machines take a long time and many cabbies aren't proficient in their use, so it's always a hassle.

At the very least, have the tip available in cash. I'm pretty sure the cab drivers have to wait a long time to get their tips if they're included in the credit card. But, as PPs have said, it's much easier to have cash to pay the entire fare + tip.

Here is the deal. All Mears cabs can do the credit card thing. It is their way of getting out of using the credit card by saying it takes to long to get it through. They have to pay 8% to Mears to turn it in. Credit cards in the amount less than $75.00 do not have to be approved as Mears guarantees the driver that amount of money less the 8%.
