We just brought in our mail for the day and we received a letter from our city telling us that we are now required to pay $15 in tax per pet each year. :confused3 :headache: Now I know that's not that much money and our dog is definitely worth it, but I do find this tax a bit rediculous.

I have never heard of paying tax on a pet. Has anyone else? Do you pay tax for your pets where you live?

When I lived in Maine we had to pay same sort of money because we owned a dog. I can't remember if it was a tax or something else.

is that a tax in addition to a pet license.

we have to license each of our dogs. it is about $15 each, I think.

My town you have to pay a license fee for dogs. Is this what they are talking about?
If so can you write it off on your taxes since you are paying a tax to your town?

We pay to license our dog. We definitely pay it although I know many who refuse to license their pets. I think it makes total sense for pet owners to put in money that goes towards county animal services.

Up in Maine, only dog owners had to pay an extra fee or tax.

We pay to license our cat in Maryland.

There's some sort of fee here (DD and her family have a dog and 2 cats), but I believe it's just for the dog - and I "think" it's a yearly license fee..

My town requires that we license our cat. While its not called a tax, we all know that it really is. She's neutered so it only cost $6. We also have to prove she has her rabies shots up to date each year.

We called them dog tags and the raby shots have to be up to date in order to get one.

Oh yes, we are taxed every year 15.00 per pet too, it makes me so mad every single time I see this petty bill.

There's no way I would pay a license fee or tax on my cats. EVER!

That's just stupid and money grubbing from the local government.

We had to pay a tag fee for our cats every year when we lived in the city. Ticked me off because they were house cats that never went out. Charade is right it's just a money maker. Unfortunately we couldn't get around it because we got the cats from the shelter so they knew we had them. I believe it was $15 each too.

Now we live in a rural area, nobody knows how many animals I have, and nobody sends me a yearly bill.

We're charged a fee when we get our cats vaccinated for rabies. There's no way around it unless we go to a veterinarian in another town. It's silly IMO.

That money, be it a tax or tags goes toward your city or county animal shelter a.k.a animal control.

We have an annual license ---- I think it's $15 for unneutered and $6 for neutered, or something. Veterinarians are required to fax rabies certificate to your town hall, so they know if you have a dog.

I don't mind it since it goes to support animal control (which isn't that extensive), but it's also some level of protection in case of a lawsuit involving the dog. I imagine the insurance company would leap on the fact that you hadn't regustered the dog.

I pay $7 a year for Rink.

He gets a tag and he's supposed to wear it with his rabies tag, otherwise-- if Tom gets stopped walking him one night he could get a ticket.

Stupid.

Orlando does not require pets to be licensed nor do they charge any type of tax for them. I was shocked when I moved here to find this to be the case. In Missouri, we had to license both cats and dogs. If you sent in proof of vaccinations, you paid a discounted amount.

It totally makes sense to me for the city to do this. The money to run animal services and the city pet shelters has to come from somewhere. Besides, I'm for anything that makes people take responsibility for the pets by having the vaccinated or limiting the number of pets per household to a reasonable number.

All these petty fees are a tax increase that lets politicians claim they are against tax increases. Personally, things need to be funded, and I'd rather see it be seen for what it is.
