Anyone have any experience with this rental car outfit? Pay-Less Rental Cars. i understand thatthey are off-airport and probably will be a bit less convenient than oter, larger companies, but they are advertising a $157 weekly rate on a full-sized car. That sounds really good!

Please let me know if you know anything.

Thanks.

We rented an economy car from them in 2000 for $77/week ($ 102 including taxes and fees). The car was a Suzuki Swift and was very small, but it was big enough for the two of us. We had no trouble with Payless. The shuttle to and from the airport was very efficient.

Try Dollar using one of the following codes: fish, entertain, mcc, or fvg. Check out the transportation board for more tips.

Hello Hawkeye314- We rented from them last year. I was also concerned about not ever hearing about them before. Don't be. They were by far the cheapest rate around at the time I needed to rent. They are off-site, but they have a shuttle bus to and from the airport, it takes about 5 min. to get there. Of all the car rental companies at the airport, only 5 are on site. We rented a minivan and got one with only 6000 miles on it. There was no line at pickup or drop off and I'd use them again if they have the best price. Hope I gave you one less thing to worry about.

I rented an economy car from them the end of June. The car was not the greatest it had 40,000 miles on it and it seemed like 80,000. Also, there were many dents in the car and the radio did not work. The service was very good and the shuttle to the airport was excellent. I needed a very cheap car for two days and received it. I would use them again only I would rent a bigger car. My next trip is to Tampa and they don't have a location at that airport. Good luck!

hmmm i dont think its any better..here, look at the breakdown in price for a 10 day period for the smallest car they have:

Rate Type Qty. Amount Mi/Km ExtendedAmount Total
Weekly 1 134.90 Unlimited 134.90
Extra Day 3 34.40 102.20
Airport Access/Imposed Fee -- 8.7% 23.71 USD
State Surcharge 10 2.05 20.50 USD
State Sales Tax -- 6% 16.35 16.35 USD
License Recovery Fee 0.40 4.00 USD
ESTIMATED TOTAL $283.67 USD

:) maybe you can get a better deal though..good luck!!

woah! dont know why the numbers squished together like that when i submitted it. geeze..sorry!!

I found a great rate using them at orbitz.com (or maybe it was travelocity.com). We're going to be there for 1.5 weeks so I was looking at a weekly rate and then an additional daily rate.

Thanks for the feedback! You guys are great!

I've had 2 terrible experiences with Payless and won't consider renting with them again. The first time was so bad I don't know why I gave them a 2nd chance, but I guess it was the lure of the rate. At least I made a reservation with Alamo in case I had another problem with Payless which we did. The agent made an imprint of our credit card and refused to put a dollar figure, actually expecting us to sign it and wait until we returned with the car for her to fill in ANY rate. When we said we wanted our credit slip back because we were not renting under those conditions, the agent tried to claw it from my husband's hands shrieking that it was their property. Like Heck! That was OUR cc number, and once we signed that blank credit slip they could've put in any price they wanted whether we rented or not. A reputable business doesn't do that. We've rented several times from Alamo in Orlando and don't bother shopping around anymore. The rates are lowest of the big companies, they're incredibly efficient (you can even do all the stuff online and not have to deal with a person for pick up), and the cars are new. There's no signing the dotted line without a price attached. It's fast, easy, streamlined and a much more professional operation. I'm glad some folks have had good experiences, but I cannot recommend them in the least. If you do want that rate at least book a back-up res so you can easily walk out if need be.

Thanks for that, unfortunatly, disturbing news. I'm still undecided but may take the risk. As you said, the rate is the lure...I will make a back-up rezzie, though.

Well, I went back to their website and the cheapie fare is no longer there. It's now less expensive to rent from Dollar using one of the online codes. I feel safer, but poorer.

Hawkeye, I'm glad you found a good rate at a more dependable company. I used to be a TA and booked Dollar with confidence. I've rented a lot of cars, from big and small companies and never run into what I encounted with Payless. In the long run you might be money ahead. Some, not all, smaller companies try to get you with secret fees like cleaning. Once I rented from a company in L.A. that charged if you didn't run it through a car wash and vacuum it, but we weren't told that until it was too late. They then proceeded to overcharge us, and it took months to get that corrected. The savings was no savings at all. Have a good trip!

About Dollar - sign up for their e-mail of specials and keep checking car rates, as they might come down. Also, the code at Alamo.com is YQ to get an internet discount. You might still do better.
