Several years ago I did a series of GPS measurements of pathways around DVC and WDW. (See link below)

In June, 2006 I measured some distances around the SSR resort so members can get a feel for distances. These are shown as marked on the photo of the resort map.

Part A: Distances

Yellow: Congress Park Lookout to Downtown Disney is 0.35 mile.
Red: Congress Park Lookout around the point and to junction with path in blue: 0.25 mile
Blue: Congress Park bus stop to edge of main pool: 0.24 mile
White: Edge of main pool to entranceway for The Paddock pool, going the long way around the lake, is 0.36 mile.
Cyan: Entranceway to Paddock pool going to Congress Park overlook is 0.43 mile.

To get a feel for time, at an average walking speed of 2.5 mph, a quarter mile (1320 feet or 4.4 football fields) would take 6 minutes. At a brisk pace (3 mph), a quarter mile would take 5 minutes)

Part B: Pathway to DD

Using the photo sheet below, from the overlook at Congress Park (photo A) turn left to head along the lake (photo B). Follow the pathway (photo C) to Buena Vista drive, then turn right. Proceed over the bridge (photo D) and on toward the main bus loading area for DD (photo E). Veer to the right and enter DD marketplace (photo F)

Photo G: A look at SSR building 5101-5436, taken from about halfway along the walk from the main pool to the paddock pool (pathway in white)

Sorry for the filesize of the map photo, but I wanted to maintain the details. Apologies to those on dial-up.

You can review some of the other (old) pathways revealed posts by following the link below. Note that when they were originally created, the board allowed HTML code, which is now turned off. Ignore all the formatting codes. Also, unfortunately all the photo links are now lost, and the links for the posts for the Theme Parks walks no longer work.

(One of these days I hope to redo those old pathways revealed posts and get the photos back in)... :teeth:

Pathways Revealed: Part 1

Thanks, Bill.
I stayed at SSR in May. You retraced a few of my morning walks. I guess my walks were not as strenuous as I thoght.
Again, thanks for the info, and the great photos.

I cannot thank you enough for doing that, Bill. Excellent illustrations and information!

Wonderful information - Thanks so much- Do you by any chance have any idea about the distance from HOB to bus stop at marketplace? Trying to decide about going from OKW to DTD to SSR to HOB and back to OKW when we are there in September if it can be done in a big loop. Oh yes and if I get my walking up to speed by then. Seems like it might make a nice walk early in the AM. Thanks again for the other info you have posted - it really can put things in perspective as to how big resorts are and how far things are from each other.

Thanks Bill!

We were wishing we had something like this for our morning walks around the resort last month!

KLEONARD, I agree! We walked almost every day and what I thought was closer to 3miles was barely 2!! We started adding the walk to OKW to get a little more time in.

The surrey bikes have a map attached to them and it shows departing Community Hall (18) follow the blue line, cross the street at the cyan line, cyan line to the white line and back to Congress Park is .8 mile. From the looks of Bills numbers, that is exactly right!! It really looks bigger, but when you walk it it doesnt take that long.

The Paddocks bridge really cuts the walk over in half!

Thanks Bill for taking the time and illustrating this. It is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks for the outstanding illustration and info. The DW and I became members at SSG earlier this year, but haven't stayed there yet. You answered several questions without me having to ask.

Sorry, but I've never measured that distance. I'll bet it's at least 1/2 mile.

You could make a pretty nice walk from OKW which would be mostly a loop.

From OKW near building 55, take the pathway to DD West side which would put you near HoB. (0.93 mile). From Westside to Marketplace (estimate 0.5 mile). From there to Congress park lookout (yellow line: 0.36 mile)

If you look at the map, just below and left of #11 (boat dock) is a bridge. That bridge connect directly to the path from OKW. So the walk from the lookout to the OKW path is (estimated at 0.5 mile). Then continue back from there to OKW (estimated at 0.45 mile)

So the entire walk would probably be in the vicinity of 2-3/4 mile. Maybe as high as 3 miles.

Would be a nice walk.

Thankyou, Caskbill that is a great map, I do believe it shows that SSR is not a bad walk from anywhere, but it also shows we did not get as much exercise as we thought. Several others had posted that it was over a mile from CP to the main pool and I hope this helps people who are worried about staying and walking. :cool1:

Wow, hard to believe anyone would actually say over a mile.

Just for comparison, in Epcot, the walk all the way around the lake is exactly 1-mile. (I bet they designed it that way). So to walk from the American Adventure, all the way around to get back to the American Adventure again, is a 1 mile walk. From CP at SSR to the main pool is nowhere near that distance.... :teeth:

boy I really though it was much further to the main pool from CH than DD....

I mean I walked the DD several times a day for a couple of days....

You know it might just be the sun. there were trees to shade you on the walk to DD. but there were very few trees on the walk to main pool - of course I wasn't doing the main pool but the food court....

It just seems hotter - hotter to me means = longer....

I might have to reconsider staying at SSR again....

It is a lovely resort!

You know its funny, the first time I stayed at SSR was CP section and we stayed a week, Our first walk to the pool seemed long but after a couple of days DW and I where saying, (you know this is not a bad walk at all ) thats when I got the jogging map and found out it was hardly a walk at all. So I dont know what it is that gives it the feeling of being further than it is, its not the distance. :cool1:
