does anybody know what is the proceedure is when you have a severe disability and live miles away from London when the machine readable passports run out and we have to get a visa.

Hi Ali, its all still abit of a mystery I'm afraid, nothing sorted yet as far as uk passport agency is concerned, I think it'll start being such an upheaval that when the US realises that visitor numbers are dropping they'll sort out a way for those of us that are miles away from our ukpa to get it sorted locally perhaps through a solicitor or post office or something, thats what I'm hoping anyway 'cos even Newport gwent is a long way for us down in the westcountry, something will work out I'm sure.

thanks,

we are thinking about DVC and it just entered my head ...... what if we buy and then can't get DS over ? It would be a nightmare for people with severe disablilitys to get down to London but I wondered if there was anybody who hadn't renewed there passports before October last year who were now encountering this problem.

The US government extended the time limit for biometric passports. It's now October 2005. Although, when October comes around they may decide to extend it again. (and keep on doing it until the UK's IT is up and running). I would imagine that, when this country's ready, biometric info will have to be provided at the same time as the passport application. This can't be done by post and I can't imagine passport offices could cope with personal applications. I would agree they'll probably have to sort something out with, perhaps, main Post Offices.

Ocky

getting to our local passport office wouldn't be a problem I was just anxious if we had to travel to london to get visa's in they did away with the waiver scheme for holiday makers

There's a an article in todays Mirror about ID cards and it mentions that there will be a number regional centres to get biometric passports and in rural areas a mobile unit.

If your sons passport has less than a year to go before renewal I would get a new on now, then you won't have to worry again for another 10 years :)

If the USA did away with the visa waiver you would have to travel to the nearest USA Embassy to obtain a visa. No point in worrying about it, if it happens it happens not much we can do about it. :)
