Having cruised twice before, this hasn't been an issue for me, since I've had a passport for years (decades) .... but do people need passports to cruise?

No. You need EITHER a passport OR a certified birth certificate plus a government issued photo ID if you are 18 or over. Children need only a birth certificate.

The idea is that you need a proof of citizenship document and a photo ID, and the passport provides both.

thanks so much - I forwarded your message on to our other possible cruisers on our possible cruise. :)

There are different requirments for U.S. citizens, U.S. resident aliens, and foreign visitors.

The rules the kcashner posted are for U.S citizens only.

For U.S citizens, there's a third option for someone who is a naturalized U.S. citizen: a certified certificate of naturalization and a picture ID.

That would be me!! I just filled out my passport application yesterday. I don't want to take my Certification of Naturalization with me and risk losing it. The thought of what I would have to go through with the INS (or whatever they are called now) to replace it is unpleasant!

I was told that the naturualization certificates were not replacable,- find that hard to belive, but I am not taking any chances.....

What documentation do I need to bring?

All U.S. and Canadian citizens must travel with proof of citizenship, which is a valid passport, original, state-certified birth certificate and picture identification, or a certified naturalization certificate with a picture identification. Acceptable forms of picture identification are state or provincial driver's license, or federal, state, province or local government photo I.D. card. Guests age 17 and under who are U.S. or Canadian citizens are only required to have proof of citizenship, excluding picture identification. These guidelines are based on U.S. government regulations which are subject to change at any time. It is the Guest's responsibility to check with their Travel Agent, government agencies, embassies or consulates prior to their vacation to ensure that they have proper documentation. Any Guest traveling without proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of cruise fare will be issued.

New security guidelines require all adult Guests to show a picture I.D. to embark and disembark the ship in all ports, including Castaway Cay. Please be advised that anyone under the age of 18 wishing to go ashore unaccompanied will be required to have a consenting parent, guardian or other responsible adult with them at the gangway, to provide their signature as authorization.

din,

They aren't. They will give you other proof of your Naturalization (it apparently takes up to a year or more to get), but if you lose that fancy piece of paper, you'll never get another one.
