Anyone have any trouble getting through the Halifax airport without passports? We don't need them for travel to the US yet. Just wondering how much hassle there is. We will be travelling with kids. What about at the US airports?

I went through the Halifax airport, going to the US within the last month. I had no problems without a passport. You will need your birth certificate and drivers license, (or other photo id). Good point about the children though. I know that last time, we needed their birth certificate, but they don't have any photo id. Does anyone know what you have to bring for children?

we got photo Id made for our our child at service NB 7 bucks. looks just like a Driver's licence.

The only two pieces of photo IDs I have with me are my driver license and an expired passport. I have gotten a new passport since, but I left it at my folk's home far away, and I don't really want to ask them to mail it to me and risk having it lost. Would it be ok for me to use an expired passport as an ID even though I have a new passport?

Thanks...I don't travel much

My experience with expired passports is that anyone who has to do with immigration (and the airlines have to deal with them so they enforce their rules) HATES them and gets very suspicious if you try to use them as ID, even though you're not trying to use them as a passport. I don't know why. Maybe because people aren't careful about guarding them and making sure others don't get hold of them?

But you should be fine with your birth certificate and driver's license for now, though every single person you deal with is going to lecture you about needing a passport as of December 31st.

Oh, and we've never been given a hard time about not having photo ID for our daughter (now age 7) though we were given a good hard questioning the first time we took her from the US into Canada because we had only her SHORT FORM birth certificate (Nova Scotia), which doesn't include the parents' names! I don't know if they even issue these anymore... it's a little wallet-sized card. Lesson learned... now we have the long-form birth certificate and are in the process of applying for her passport.

Our family me , DW, and DD(5) all have gotten our passports. A nice tip I received from our CAA rep was that childrens passport pictures can be updated each year with a new mug shot.
