Thought this info might be helpful to those debating passport/birth certificate options. New regs from the State Department.

New Requirements for Travelers Between the United States and the Western Hemisphere

Travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada will be required to have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States.* This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports.* *This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States.* Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.*

December 31, 2005 – Passport or other accepted document required for all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America.

December 31, 2006 – Passport or other accepted document required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.

December 31, 2007 – Passport or other accepted document required for all air, sea and land border crossings.

I agree this seems pretty definitive, however some people hang their hat on a line in the first link of that page you have:

"Implementation Dates for New Travel Initiative Requirements

The proposed implementation timeline is as follows

They focus on the word "proposed" which does indicate this is not a fully done deal.

I wouldn't take that bet, but that is just me.

Yes, I agree, homeland security is cracking down. My significant other works with work visas and student visas, people who go in and out of the country, and the rules are VERY very strict. And have gotten more strict in the past couple of years. Which is why I went ahead and ordered a passport for this cruise. I figured it's good for 10 years anyway, I'm sure I'll use it again sometime. Also passport fees just went up in March! A full passport costs $97 now.

I figured posters on this board might want to know more about this issue. I know it has been a debated one.

Yes, I agree. This issue has been talked to death.

Especially since it is PROPOSED at this time.

Again, no offense stina. If you do a forum search on passports-you'll see what we mean!!!!
