passport

If they don't come I will ask them about birth certificates.
We are not going to Alaska, if it sails it is to the Caribbean

Thank you

You’re going to Alaska - the foreign country is Canada. It’s not someplace exotic. And, yes, I am aware it’s the flying aspect where the passport becomes a big deal. If you need it in this situation, you’ve got bigger issues than a passport.
US citizens aren’t allowed in Canada without a passport, passport card, or NEXUS card. Also, disney explicitly requires a passport for the closed loop cruises out of Vancouver.

Enhanced driver’s licenses are also acceptable if driving across the border, I believe.

As a Canadian I need a passport I cruise no matter where it leaves from.

Our RCCL cruise in August not not go to Canada.....but that is not for the cruise I am talking about

Yes, I would sail without one under these circumstances. Any chance they made a photocopy of the passports before mailing them in?

If they don’t get processed in time, do they have official birth certificates to take with them? That‘s all we used to need for The Bahamas.

And I wouldn’t be worrying about it.
Canada is not allowing any cruises through at least the end of this year, so it can't be for an Alaskan cruise stopping in Canada. And yes, you need a passport for them coming from the US. They will not accept DL+birth certificate and haven't in years.

I just renewed my daughter’s passport. . I did the express passport service for an extra $60 and also paid about $16 to get it sent back overnight. I mailed it express delivery with tracking so I have proof it was received. We need it by October. I hope we get it within 6 to 8 weeks.

Meriweather - I was seeing Alaska as your your next cruise in your signature, so thinking you were dealing with US ports only and thought odds of needing to stop in Canada, at all, were pretty slim.

I am obviously out of the loop on passport laws. Probably because I take mine on all cruises and most flights, using it in place of an enhanced DL. I also carry my passport card for domestic flights.

If I gave bad info, I apologize. And will delete so no future readers are misinformed.

I am cruising in Alaska in Aug.....no stops in Canada.
That is not the cruise the others are going on. That one is Caribbean in October.

I thought passports were required to sail. Castaway Cay is Bahamas. We are renewing ours and getting the cards. $30 each sure beats the price for the books.

I wonder, if the “powers that be,” can look them up in the system since they already have passports (and an assigned passport number). So even if they don’t have passports in hand, they are still legally in the system. Know what I mean? Do they have pics of the old ones?

I don't know, because I've never lost my passport (book) and needed to find a consulate or embassy. But I don't need to involve the "powers that be" because I have a passport book, which allows me to sashay onto a plane. Given that if I'm flying home in the middle of a vacation it'd be for an emergency, I'd prefer to leave the middleman out of it.

Edit: sorry, thought you were replying to #33.

The thing about emergencies that might cause you to have to fly home, or stay there for a bit, is that you'll get to GET a passport while in that country. You won't be stuck forever. You'll just get to spend time and money for a temporary passport. It's not something I would do on purpose, but I wouldn't panic about it or leave anyone behind, either.

Talk to them sooner about birth certificates, if they don't live in the state where they were born.

Closed loop cruises from the US generally do not require passports.
The passport card is the equivalent of a normal ID and birth certificate combination, which is why it'll work for a closed loop cruise. The passport card does not do what a passport book does. If you run into a flying-home emergency, you'll get to spend time in a bureaucrat's office, getting a temporary and expensive passport book.
