passport ???

I know I've read so many of these questions from other posters, but I can't seem to find them thru the search, so I apologize for asking again....but I just want to be sure.

We are headed to Disney on March 3rd and returning on March 13th, we have a 4 night Disney Dream cruise from the 9-13...

I was filling out dh's passport info. and I'm the guarantor.....that's when I noticed MY passport expires on March 18/2012.

Do you think I'll have any trouble travelling so close to the expiry date? I'd really rather wait and get it on our return, as $$ is tight and every penny is going towards paying for it.

We traveled last year to the US with our passport expiry date 4 days after retuning from Disney and had no problems.

Normally your passport needs to be good for at least 6 months after your entry date, but with travel to the US you can use it right up until its expiry date.

I'd be more worried about the cruise portion of your trip. Even if your passport is fine for a trip to the U.S. up to the actual date of expiration, your cruise will take you to foreign ports of call where rules might be different. I'd probably renew it now, if it were me, just for the peace of mind.

Did you book your cruise through a travel agent? They'd be able to tell you for sure.

It's a 4nt disney cruise to the Bahamas, I booked with DU...so perhaps I'll contact them..

I would update yours too since you are going for your dh's passport anyways.

Alot of places require 6mths before it expires. I personally would get it done all at once.


Maybe use a CC to help spread it out pay 40 on it right away then next month pay the rest before interest.

Although I would personally renew my passport too, I thought I'd let you know that when we got off the Dream in Nassau in August we did not need to take out passports with us. We only had to show our photo ID (driver's licence) and our KTTW card. Our kids, who were under 18, only showed their KTTW card.

Alot of places require 6mths before it expires. I personally would get it done all at once.

The link above is for the 6month exemption club for travel into the US. Canada and The Bahamas is listed in the 6 month exemption club. I would look into it to be sure but I would guess the list is reciprocated amongst the countries listed.

I have decided just to renew it, I'm over the border for shopping all the time and would have had to renew when I returned anyway!

It just sucks that it costs so much for a renewal!!

I've heard it's hit or miss. My friends parents were headed south for a couple weeks and were within 6 months and they got turned around at the airport. They even had return flights booked and still got turned around.

Were somewhat in the same boat. My wife, and kids' passports are going to be within 3 months of expiry when we travel so we are going to renew them. I think you can pay a little more and get rush service as well

I dunno about any of the laws or anything but this was what I was going to mention as well. It does say it was updated in 2009, and I am sure a bit has changed, I would look for a more recent policy if possible.

No, I checked their website and that(2009 list) was the last update to the list

Probably something in the situation, or what was said, made the border control people suspect they were likely to stay in the U.S. beyond their passport's expiry date.

Show up at the airport with a return trip airline ticket and hotel booking at your destination, and answer the question "What is the purpose of your visit?" with "We're going to Disneyworld for a vacation!", and the border guy feels pretty sure you're not going to overstay your passport expiry.

Show up at the border in a car, as a snowbird who on past visits has spent up to six months at a condo you own in Florida, and suddenly your assurances that you will come back to Canada in a month to renew your expiring passport don't sound as good to the border guys.

Who knows what happened. Border Agent could have been having a bad day for all I know. Since it is ultimately up to them anyways.

My friend's parents aren't snow birds or anything like that either.

No 6 month requirement for the US. Your passport just needs to be valid to your return date.

If someone was turned around it was likely for another reason, not a passport 6 month buffer reason, because such doesn't exist for the US.
