Passport time

We applied for passports for our daughters at our post office on April 4th, and got the passports in the mail on April 15th. This was a "renewal", meaning (for children under 16) a completely new application but using the previous passport along with birth certificate as proof of citizenship and identity.

Be careful a number of countries will not accept a passport that expires within 6 months. If your cruise is in the Caribbean, you might be ok. I don't know the rules for that. But if your cruise is a European one, you will want to get your passport renewed before the cruise.

I've read that also. I'm in the same boat and can't decide if I should renew. We are doing the eastern Caribbean in September and our passports expire in November. I can't seem to get an answer.

The Caribbean ports allow Americans on a closed loop cruise to enter with no passports. Your passports are FINE for those ports.

I know it's fine for cruising, but more concerned about an emergency and having to fly home from a non-US island. Which is the only reason a passport is needed for most cruises.

In the Caribbean, as long as your passport is valid on the day you return to the US, you're fine.

The 6 month requirement is mostly on other countries, primarily in Europe & Asia.

I would get them as soon as you can. It's an important document to have, and I wouldn't want to risk stressing about possibly not having them before a cruise.

We had our appointment at the post office on 4/1 and the passports came 4/12. This is even with me putting the incorrect SS# on one of the apps. (they caught it and fixed it before we even called). The online status said our apps were in the final stages with an estimated day to receive them of 4/16...on the same day they arrived in the mail, so that seems to have been a bit off.

That's how our status update worked too....I think final stages mean in the mail!

I'm curious for your reasons for getting both passport books and cards?
We got both the books and cards (for all of us) as we live close to Canada and would rather take the cards over the border than our books. Also, when we fly domestically, we use the cards as id for our kids (yes, I'm aware that kids do not need id but my oldest DS, when he was 12, was over 5'10 and weighed 165 and did not appear his age. I've had one too many arguments with TSA and having my DS go through the full body scanner and having to remove his shoes. According to TSA's rules, he does NOT have to remove shoes nor go through full body scanner--and yes, it matters to me).

I thought only under 12 and over 75 could keep shoes on.

And no one has to go through the full body scanner - but you are opting for possibly more intrusive hand scanning.

It's most definitely "12 and under" not "under 12".

Argh, thanks for mentioning that. My eldest gets the "no way you're only 11!" every time but in a joking manner really... wouldn't be surprised if that's a girl vs boy thing. I'm making a mental note of the passport card idea for DS8 in a few years, or to investigate state IDs at least. It never fails to amaze me how surprised people are that the child of a really tall person would be, uh, really tall. One would think common sense might prevail when you see the family group.

Sorry. I always mentally include the age when I see it.

Apart from shoe sizing for kids (and why they don't have size 9 for boys OR girls clothing), the "is it inclusive or not" age thing was pretty much the hardest thing about normal day to day parenting. :) The zoo in Seattle did it differently than the zoo in Tacoma, so I was constantly having to figure it out in the early years.

So you totally get a pass on that, Dug. ;) :) :)

We got the cards with our passports for the same reason, we are a couple hours from Canada! We had enhanced licenses before but now we can just use these.

We submitted my daughter's application for a "renewal" passport on April 8 using routine processing. The website today (April 21) says it is on the way via priority mail. Pretty quick turnaround times!

Just sent my renewal application in on 10/27 - got it in the mail (priority, but still) around 4:30/5pm that day. I paid for expedited just because I'm flying home for Christmas and prefer to use my passport for that, so I wanted to make sure I had it before then.

Got my new passport TODAY - 12 days later, and that includes 2 weekends!!

Color me impressed!!

(Now I just want my old one back - I know they mail them separately - because it has my Cuba stamps in it!!)
