Looking for help in making sure I understand the recent deferral decision on biometric passports / visa waivers.

The US requires all British visitors, including children, to hold valid machine-readable passports from 26 October 2004.
After 26 October 2004, children who are currently on another person’s passport will need to obtain their own machine-readable passport for visa-free travel to the US.
British Citizen machine-readable passports will continue to be valid for visa-free travel to the US under the VWP until the passport expires.

All four of us have machine-readable passports.

US law originally required that travellers under the Visa Waiver Programme carrying passports issued after 26 October 2004 would need to hold biometric passports. The President has agreed a one-year deferral of this requirement, to October 2005.

DH and I both need new passports, and were planning on renewing before 26 October 2004 anyway. DD1's also expires fairly soon, so I had intended to renew hers before October, even though I could wait a couple more months. On renewal, she'll get an adult 10 year passport.

DD2 has a child's passport (valid for 5 years) which doesn't expire until august 2006. If I renew hers now (or before Oct 04), she'll still be 15 and will have another child's passport issued for 5 years. She'll be 16 next March and will then qualify for a full 10 year passport, which would be preferable.

However, does this mean that, as things stand at the moment, all these new passports may still have to be renewed (to fulfill the biometric requirements for visa-waiver entry to the US) once the UK Passport Office are able to include them, or will passports issued before the Oct 2005 deadline be acceptable until they expire?

Hi

I am in the same predicament. Mine runs out Jan 2006 so would be valid for this years holiday but not next. I was gonna renew now but my travel agaent said it has been put back a whole year and I would now need to renew before Oct 2005.

Hilary, the way I read it, any passport issued before October 2005 will be valid for visa free travel until they expire. I'm assuming that the extension has been granted to allow the UK Passport Agency time to put systems in place and that, wef October 2005 all passports issued by them will be biometric.

Hi Hilary IMO after reading through the relevant info on the Passport site I feel that the only difference between the date next year and the date this october is they are allowing British citizens to get a new machine readable passport BEFORE the date of October 2005 meaning they will still be valid after that date as long as they a renewed and are machine readable BEFORE October 2005.

I got mine renewed a month ago and it had 6 months left on it and my passport will be valid for the next 101/2 years regardless of the implimentations of the US gov. These changes only apply if you require a NEW passport after these dates.

If you renew them now they will still be acceptable after oct 2005.

Thanks for the replies :)

Although I didn't phrase my initial enquiry very well , I agree with what seems to be the concensus of opinion here - as long as the passports are issued before Oct 2005, even without biometric information, the current visa waiver scheme will apply until those passports expire (or the US government moves the goalposts ;) ).

I think I'll wait until DD2 turns 16 before getting hers renewed, then she'll get a full 10 year one instead of another child's one.

Im not sure what to do about my 2 DD's, their passport's run out July 05.Were going to USA in October(04) so when we return home they will still have 8 full months on them.
We shall not be planning another holiday until May 06.
Mine and DH's run out Aug 2010.
:earsgirl:

If you itend to travel again in 2006 IMO then I would renew them before october 2005 after that you would have to get the biometric type ones which I have to assume will be more difficult to obtain as well as more expensive .

Sound like the best advise and thats what I would do

When you renew your passport, you are given up to nine months 'credit' for any remaining time on the old one - so if you have eight months left, the expiry date of the new passport will take that into account and add on the eight months to the 5 or 10 years of the passport's life.

Also, you need to bear in mind that when travelling to certain countries (US included) you need six months validity remaining on a passport, so don't leave them until the last minute to renew :).
