I'm alittle confused about whether not or a passport is needed on the 4 night Wonder cruise early in 2007? I have heard that if you travel by "sea" then a PP isn't necessary until 1/1/08. Is this true?

Thanks
Jack

Yup, and keep your eyes peeled for a new passport just for cruisers. :) I hear it will be about half the price of a normal passport. I am hoping they will have that cruise passport ready by 2008. But for now...NO passport needed if your just cruising! Note- if you are flying out of the US you will need a passport!

1) Cruising, not required.
2) Flying, required

I wouldn't hold my breath for a special "cruise only" passport. The ENTIRE reason for the new regulations is to have one, universal form of ID for international travel for all US citizens.

they are talking about an less expensive passcard for border crossings and Western Hemisphere cruises. And with the pressure from the Canadian government and northern border US states, it might happen.

But I'm still go to urge clients to skip the passcard and go with a passport .. because as soon as they want to go somewhere else (i.e. Europe or FLY to the Caribbean) they'll need a full blown passport anyway and the money spent on the passcard will have been a waste.

And since passports are required for flying eff 1/23/2007, what happens if you cruise to a Caribbean port and then need to fly home due to an emergency? Yes, it'll be possible to do so without a passport ... but boy it'll be a much bigger PITA than if you had a passport with you.

Does anyone know what kind of turnaround time it usually takes to get your passport after filing.i've heard maybe 6 to 8 weeks,is that a good estimate.we are tossing whether we should or not for march 07 cruise, but all posts i read are saying i should probaly do and be done.thanks in advance

right now 6-8 weeks for processing might be a good estimate ... sometimes they can come much quicker (i.e. 3 weeks) but the official government quote tends to be 6 weeks minimum. As as the 1/23/2007 date gets closer, and people start applying at the last minute, it will start to cause backlog and delays. So the sooner the better...
