Passport needed to check into hotel?

We are planning a trip for the end of October. DD was born was born in July and we haven't gone to the embassy for her passport yet. Do we need one to check into the hotel?

When we checked in the last few times, they've just asked to see the Passport of the Lead Passenger and not anyone else.
