We will be driving to Buffalo and then flying to Disney. Do I need a passport for my children (under the age of 15) when driving to the states? I was searching the CDN border website and it states that children under the age of 15 do not require a passport - just a birth certificate. Is this a NEW rule?

thanks in advance,

Lori

No our kids are 11 & 9 and we did the exact same thing! Crossed in Buf and flew to Florida, I just used my kids birth certificates and that was that!

Passports for kids under 15 are only $35. Personally, I prefer to have them.

I also have them (passports) for my kids .... even though I drive the border and fly out of the US.

We have them for ours as well. We drive but I still think (justified or not) that it makes everything go more smoothly at the crossing.

For safety sake as well. Should an accident occur in the US and insurance needs to medevac you or a loved one back to Canada, the kids could get stuck at the border. A Canadian Passport and proper custody documentation if not travelling with both natural parents is essential, even if you never pull it out; trains, planes, or automobiles!
