The time of year has come where by I worry that I have not done something ready for our holiday.

I'm pretty certain I am just asking a question that I already know the answer to.

My passport expires 22/04/12 and we return from Florida 18/09/11... it is six months that the passports has to be in date from when you go/arrive home isnt it?

Your passport only has to be valid for the length of your stay, it doesn't matter if it expires the day after your return.

As Jen says your passport only needs to be valid for dates of your travel.

Does my British passport have to be valid for six months beyond my date of departure from the United States?

No, if your passport is not valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure from the United States, it will not affect your eligibility to travel. The United States has an agreement with the United Kingdom automatically extending the validity of a passport for six months past the passport's expiration date. Therefore, your passport need remain valid only for the duration of your stay in the United States.

If you are travelling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and your passport is not valid for 90 days, you will be admitted into the United States until the date on which the passport expires.

Exactly same wording.

Who are you flying with? Chances are if you ring and ask the airline they will tell you you need 6 months or advise you to find the info on one of the above sites. They are known for giving wrong info. VA, BA & all US carriers 101% do not require 6 months, Charter carriers will usually not confirm or deny 6 months but I don't know anyone who has been refused boarding.

Your dates are longer than 6 months anyway so no question you need to renew, on the other hand if you want to they will add upto 9 months from your old passport onto a new one so you won't lose by renewing early.
