:confused3 No one in our family has passports so we will need 4. What can I expect to pay for them? Where do most of you go to get yours? Are they all the same price? How far out from our trip should we get them? As always, Thanks so much!!

I happen to have passport applications here for my kids...adult (16 and older) passports are $97 and under age 16 they cost $82. No small chunk of change there! I got the applications at the post office, and they can be turned in at the post office too. For children under age 14, the child and both parents must appear at the post office with identification and proof of citizenship for the child. I'm not sure how long it takes to get them. The children's passports are good for 5 years and the adult for 10 years.

We got ours at our courthouse b/c of the post office's hours. They told us it would be six weeks at the earliest, any sooner than that was a miracle.

I did the post office too! Just easy and convenient! They say takes 6 weeks, but got ours in 4 weeks.

I just applied for my passport (adult) at our post office a week ago. Our post office only does it Monday-Friday/10am-3pm. Had my picture taken at a local drug store because it was cheaper than being taken at the p.o. The charge for the passport was $67 (one check) and an additional $30 (seperate check) for the post office processing fee. I was told it would be about 6 weeks...or for an additional fee it could come quicker. I had to take my raised seal birth certificate which gets sent in with your check and paperwork. I did have to call home and verify my parents exact birthdate/birthplace which is a question on the passport form.

Everything you need can be found here:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Not all post offices process passport applications and some only do it during limited hours. There is a link on the site that can help you locate offices near you that can help.

They say 6 to 10 weeks, but the expectation is that it may take even longer with the big rush to get passports, so allow yourself plenty of time.

I recommend downloading the forms and gathering everything you need ahead of time, so you aren't running around looking for birth certificates etc. at the last minute. Then actually apply 3 to 4 months before your trip.

Sorry, but it always cracks me up to see Disney cruisers complain about passport costs. I love Disney, but face it, you're already paying thousands more for a family of 4 by chosing Disney, then folks are upset about paying $400 for the documents you need for every cruise, and probably should already have for you kids.

I used DVC Points and cash for my Magic ressies and it takes enough money for the cruise, but again being hit with another 400.00 for passports is significant. This may crack you up but some of us went to considerable lenghts to save for DCL and extra costs do matter. :rotfl2:

The good news about passports is that for adults, they are good for 10 years from the date of issue. And our motto is "have passport, will travel". It simply feels good to have a passport - you "could" pack your bags and jump on a plane to Paris at a moments notice. Not that we have, but its fun thinking we could.

So I don't associate passport costs with any single trip, even when I had to renew right before our last Disney Cruise. Instead, think of it as a 10 year liscence to travel.

They even make good backup ID when traveling in the states. I misplaced my state ID on a recent trip, would have had trouble getting on the plane for the trip home if I hadn't had my passport with me as well.

cheers!

We have always required a valid passport for travel outside the United Kingdom - even into our neighbouring country (France) which is just a few miles from our home. Passports are a necessity, although just as expensive here as in USA. However, they do give you the option of travelling world-wide and act as security/identification. Yes, they are an added expense - but we only need to renew them every 10yrs.
