Thanks to a scary post here on the Disboards I'm having anxiety dreams about losing my passport. Does anyone have a great passport holder or a strategy to make sure it doesn't get left behind on the plane?

Right after you show them it put it where ever you carry your wallet. It seems the woman who had left it on the plane was carrying it in a binder and placed it in the seat back pocket. Think of it as your wallet, it doesn't belong in the seat back pocket, ever.

No great strategy, but scan a copy of it and email it to your Yahoo/Gmail account. Something you can access from anywhere.

If you ever lose your passport, you can have that page printed out and will expedite you getting a new one at any American Embassy.

Put your passport in an inside pocket of your carryon bag. Take it out only when asked for.

I put mine in the same zippered section of my purse that I put my wallet. I don't want to have to worry about a separate holder for it.

The holder isn't as important as where you put it. We have holders for ours but mostly because we wanted to be able to keep other stuff with it for a one quick grab from our bags. The big thing is not to have a seperate holder you keep out of your normal travel bags but to keep it in something you have most of the time. I keep mine in my backpack. I never give up my backpack at the airport (sometimes I will check a carryon if I'm going hom and not worried about losing it though). I carry my backpack to work every day etc. I know I won't leave my backpack.

If you always carry a purse and just automatically reach for it whenever you get up that is a great place.

However if it has its own bag you normally don't carry that is the bag your going to forget.

A long time ago I backpacked around Europe for three months. I carried my passport and other important docs in a holder I carried around my neck under my shirt. I still have it and when we cruise I carry all our passports (mine, wife, 3 kids) in it until we board. It can't be lost that way. It goes into safe for the trip and around my neck again until we get home. It's a bit of overkill but it saves me anxiety.

Like all others said I put it in my purse in one of the zippered pockets where I keep other id wallet etc.. no need for special bag. Only take it out when at airport and it goes right back in the purse, through security screening.

as already said - scan or take a picture of the page with your picture/info and email it to yourself (and also save it on your computer)....
also, print that copy out and put it with your travel documents (like you set sail pass, etc)....

but as for the passport itself, keep it with you in your purse when you travel...
i have my passport in a leather holder that's the size of my passport, but that just goes right into my purse...
(actually, that leather holder holds both my passports, since i have dual citizenship and must use both passports when i travel)..

anyway, when i travel with the family, i have a whole lot of passports in my purse (doubling up for almost everyone), but it's got to be in the bag that you never put down...and that's my purse...

the moment you no longer need the passport (often right after you hand over your boarding pass), take a moment to put your passport into your purse....do not pass go, do not collect $200.

I always put it back into my purse each time i have to take it out..
in other words, after going through security, i stop, put it back into my purse and only then walk to the gate...if i need it again at the gate, i pull it out and then put it right back after handing over the boarding pass. I get it back into my purse as soon as possible.....without delay...

Don't put anything in the seat pocket...ever. If you read travel sites for tips, this is the best way to lose something. We have a travel wallet/pouch that holds passports, email printouts of hotel/rental car confirmations, luggage tags, disney docs, etc. This wallet stays in either my purse or my husband's backpack.

well...i put trash in the seat pocket...especially when i'm annoyed with the airline...the more trash the better...after 12 hours on the airplane, a whole lot of trash is in there....

Some airlines have the flight attendants clean the cabin. You know, those people assigned to help save lives in an emergency. I have also witnessed pilots assisting with the cleaning to expedite the airplanes next departure so passengers can speedily get to their destination.

So you are not punishing management.

I just keep mine in my purse or backpack, whichever I am using at the time. I've never been worried about losing it and have never lost it.

As pretty much everyone else is saying, don't put it in that back seat pocket. That was the problem in that situation. Even if you have a travel binder, don't put the passport in there. Put it in your bag that you KNOW you're going to bring off the plane.

Same mentality as the people who leave shopping carts all over the parking lot of a store. They think they are putting the store out, but some working person is the one who has to go out there and get the carts. And they are paying for people to pick up the carts or clean up their trash. Anyone thinks that the business is just going to eat this cost is naive. The business will pass this cost along to customers.

We keep photocopies of our passports in a separate carry on than our actual passports. Not really sure how helpful they would be if we lost the real ones, but it's something. I keep all of our important items in a big ziplock in my shoulder bag (happens to be a disney cruise bag :)). This includes ID, passports, whatever credit/debit card I'm bringing, all our boarding/hotel/transportation/excursion info and money (not visible). I keep money here because I also have a fear of my DH being pick pocketed.

When something comes out of the bag to show, it goes right back where it came from.

So far it has worked but if I lost this bag we would be royally screwed and I do worry about it on every vacation. I am really protective of this bag.

I use a plastic file folder that has about 5 pockets, it holds all the hard copies, (electronic versions are on my phone and email), of everything we need for the entire vacation. Then that goes in my Castaway Club backpack. My whole family knows that is the most important item for our trip so they're constantly making sure I have it. We have several of the file folders so every time we book a vacation I throw a new label on one and start planning and booking.
