Our current magic bands are less than 2 years old, and are almost certainly good for our next trip in March.
I understand that the powered portion of the magic band dissipates with the battery. but the passive bits are still there.

I also understand that the PASSIVE RFID gets you into the park and onto Fastpass rides

Now, assuming you will PAY for stuff without a magic band, is there a compelling reason to use an active RFID band?

You can still pay with your magicband with only the close range/passive RFID. I'm pretty sure my long range RFID is dead on my band, but I can pay for things with it. It just doesn't work for automatically detected photos, like on Seven Dwarves Mine Train.

Anything involving a "tap" will work with old bands -- tickets and park entry, FP+ and DAS, charge-to-room, resort room entry, etc. Only a couple of ride photos and some of the interactive stuff like your name showing on a sign need the long-range RFID.

For pics/ videos we replaced one of the pucks on one of the kids because they are always together.

If you are staying at a disney resort the plain bands/pucks are $5
