This is actually in Northern Virginia (just an excruciatingly long drive down I-95 from my part of Virginia), not DC. But still, I hope nobody died and I hope everyone is ok.

About 15 members of the United States Figure Skating community were also on the plane, returning to their homes from the just-ended National Development camp for Junior skaters that directly followed the United States Championships held in Wichita last weekend.

USFSA has not yet identified the members on board, but most of them would have been young teens with their parents, or coaches, as the camp is designated for attendance by junior champions who will be soon be moving up to world competition.

United States Figure Skating suffered a previous horrific air tragedy a half-century ago, and we desperately hope history has not repeated itself. On February 15th, 1961, the entire US Figure skating team, along with their coaches and quite a few family and friends, perished in the crash of Sabena flight 548 near Brussels, Belgium, en route to the World Championships. All passengers and crew were lost, plus a bystander on the ground, including 34 members of the skating community who died that night. I pray that somehow this time some passengers managed to survive.

Awful tragedy and my thoughts are on how on earth does this even happen?

I get the plane not seeing the military Blackhawk because their job is to be invisible BUT how on earth is there no alarm or autopilot something for a made up reason like a flock of birds to avoid this? With all the money being spent in news about AI this and AI that and Machine learning on and on, what good is it all if it doesn't help keep humans safe?

My expectation is at the minimum deal with the out of the box outliers, prevent mid air collisions & start spotting the crazies before they hurt people,

It looks like the tower gave the flight a last min change of the landing runway, which cause the plane to make a turn. The planes before that one had gone straight. Possible the helicopter 'assumed' that plane would follow the last three. The tower calls out to the helicopter but looks like it was 30 seconds before impact. When a plane is going 140 and descending, and the helicopter seems to be traveling quickly, it all happens so fast. I do wonder why the signals were not picked up as there should have been bells warning. Not sure if a helicopter could have had it's signal off or some kind of malfunction.

My son is a pilot and says there is so much in place for this not to happen. I think this is a terrible tragedy and my prayers go out to everyone.

The crash and location in the river is in D.C. limits - right next to Ronald Reagan Airport - only a couple miles from the National Mall. There will be LOTS of questions here regarding security of D.C. to be answered for on many levels. Sadly everyone died.

So incredibly sad. We were watching last night when the news started coming in. At that time, they said while there were casualties, there were confirmed reports of survivors as well. That gave us some hope, but I guess it was bad info. DD16 and DH were supposed to fly into Reagan National earlier this month. Their trip was canceled, but it got me thinking about visits to my DC area friends back in the 90s, how much I hated that part over the Potomac and how it would trigger memories of the 1982 crash. My deepest condolences to all that have been impacted.

My parents are divorced and my dad was stationed in DC. Starting at age 13 we would fly into that airport once or twice a year. I hated the way you felt like you were going to land in the river just before touching down on the runway.
