My 3rd is turning six in Nov. I am in need of party suggestions. What has been successful for you and your child? This is after school starts, after our trip to Disney, and after the 12yo's party, and after the family party for the 4yo. Keep it easy...

Bowling is always fun, and not too expensive!

When mine turned 6 last November, we had his party at the YMCA pool. It being cold already here, the kids got a big kick out of swimming "in the winter."

For DS 4th bday, we did a spy party at home. Stuff from a party website - name badges, mini mag glass, dark glasses were given to them when they arrived. We made the invites to say something about a top secret mission. They went on a scavenger hunt throughout the house, looking for clues that lead them to a pinata & the "treasure" that had been stolen. I found a large reading magnifying glass at the dollar store. They took turns being in charge of finding the next clue & got to lead the way & hold the glass. They love to play pin the tail - you could change it to pin the badge on the detective, etc. Not hard to do & easy set up, let the older siblings help w/the clues & activities.

Bowling is always a cheap easy option, pump it up type places, chuck e cheese (every kids dream, every parents nightmare.) This year we are having ds's at a local movie theater and bringing in a dvd- it is so CHEAP!

Another vote for bowling!! When my DS turned 6 in December it was great! The place even supplied the invitations, the thank you notes and thegoody bags(not filled, just the abgs themselves). The only thing I did was bring cupcakes and the filled up goody bags. It was great and only $15 a kid. It included the pizza/bowling/ and shoe rental. I even got mt DS for free with a coupon from one of those Kids coupon books.:thumbsup2

My son had his sixth party at a local childrens museum and had about 10-12 school friends invited to it. We provided and served pizza, milk/juices, and birthday cake/ice creme. It was pretty cheap and the place had all the activities for them. Had a small spider man theme gathering of immediate family at our house too. This year it looks like a bowling party (by his request) at the local alley, but more expensive that I thought (way more than the museum last year) and then another small gathering for imediate family at home with a Transformers theme. He's big into them now.:3dglasses

We just did a "Mad Science" party for my DS's 6th birthday. It was a HUGE hit. In fact, one of the moms called me afterwards to tell me that her 9yo son said it was the best b-day party he'd ever been to.

I made the kids lab coats out of white garbage bags and a sharpie. Wrote out nametags of famous scientists on them (ie Isaac Newton, Einstein, Jane Goodall...) and let them pick who they wanted to be for the party. DH borrowed lab glasses from work, so the kids were "in character". I bought Ehrlenmyer flasks off ebay for drinking glasses. And we got 10lbs of dry ice pellets. They were amazed by the bubbling, steaming "green concoction" (Lime Kool-Aid), the bubbles that burst into "steam" (hot water, dish soap and dry ice). We did other experiments (made slime with laundry starch and glue, did some growing crystals, made flames come out of an orange) and the biggest hit was when we did Diet Coke and Mentos (which must be done outdoors and while wearing the lab gear!). DS's volcano cake was also a big hit. I used my Barbie-like Doll pan to bake the chocolate mountain, put a tall shot glass in it and then covered it with cookie and cake crumbs. I dripped red icing down the sides to look like lava. When we sang Happy Birthday, we put a mixture of dry ice, cream, sugar and red food coloring so it actually oozed red cream and when the bubbles burst, "steam" came out. We lit 6 sparklers instead of candles + a #6 candle for DS to blow out. We have the thing on video and it is really impressive.

The only downside is that it required a lot of parental prep and involvement, but in the end it was worth it. He got the party of his dreams, we spent less $ than going to Chuck E Cheese, and I don't think he'll be jealous when his sister gets to spend her 8th birthday at WDW in 2 weeks.
