my cousin suggested that I might save some $$ on dd's bat mitzvah photography if instead of having formal, bound albums made up I simply went with "proof" albums. in other words, use a professional photographer, but the photographer would print all of his shots and put them in the kind of album you'd put photos in if you did the job at home.

opinions?

OK, I understand the importance of a bat mitzvah, but I didn't know that it included formal photography. Please pardon my Catholic upbringing. I have a good friend who is Jewish and I usually call her when I have a question about her faith. If she doesn't know, she goes to her son, whom she calls Rabbi Max, for the answer.

Anyway, my experience with formal photography comes from my wedding. Our deal with the photographer was to receive our formal album, and two parents albums, plus we got a proof album. Let me tell you, although we love our formal album, I really like the proof album because it tells the story of the entire day, not just snip-its from it.

Since I don't believe I'm qualified to tell you that you should or shouldn't also do a formal album for a bat mitzvah, I will tell you that I am glad that I have my formal album, but I really love my proofs. Only you will know how you will feel when the day is past.

Do you have the option of making that decision later, once you see the proofs. At that point, you will really know what you want to do instead of speculating now about it.

OTOH, you can use our mode of thinking about some things that are expensive.... "oh well, it's only a couple more home equity payments.." lol

Good luck living in the land of the 20,000 to 100.000 bat/bar mitzvah. Congrats to your daughter on this big event.

Patch's D

hey, Patch! you know EXACTLY what I'm up against, neighbor. dd went to her firned's at South Huntington JC last week, it must have cost the parents $40,000. of course, they had a zillion relatives and half the parents in the neighborhood as well as 40 kids.

I never had an album. Actually there wasn't even a photographer...Sat...in the temple! Dad took me weeks before to the temple and waited about a year or 2 before developing the film. THe pictures looked pretty pink. All 5 of them!!

Cough... cough... cough...

Pardon me for choking.

That's more than just a "couple" of home equity payments.

Maybe you can do something small at home and then take her and a couple of friends to WDW for 2 weeks. It would save you some money.

Before I get picked on... I'm kidding. I know that this is a big and important event. Just wish it didn't have to hurt your wallet so much.

I don't have a big family, but dd is very popular, so we'll have a lot of kids there. I expect to be on the lower range of the scale Patch quoted.

and I have to do it all again in 2005 for younger dd.

RUDisney - My Husband's parents ( who lived in the same area of New York) paid 5000 -8000 in 1981 and a little over 10,000 in 1986 for his brothers ceremony.

Gee, now you have me wondering what my DS's communion party will wind up costing me next year. I know it will be a LOT less than your party. I was assuming that our party will cost about $1,000. Less if I have it in my house, but then I couldn't be assured that my in-laws would leave when they are supposed to.

my cousin the event planner says the cost of a party increases by 1/2 every 7 years. so if you spent $5,000 on your wedding 14 years ago, to make a similar party for your anniversary would cost you $10,000.

my wedding was 15 years ago. the prices I'm seeing for the bat mitzvah are very much along the lines that my cousin said they'd be.

I think the proof album would be fine.

Hurry up! More questions. I feel like I am helping you plan the happy event! :D :bounce:

my cousin gave me lots of "homework" so she could help me plan the event. that's what she's in business for.
