I read that there are no more Disney grand gatherings and we are interested in taking all the kids and grand kids in 2013 or 2014 ...thought or suggestions on how to plan for such a large group...we would probably try to book during free dining...

I've done groups of 10 all the way up to 25. I always book a buffet since there are so many palettes to please. I would aim for first sittings in the meal times, so say 7:30 or 8 am for breakfast.
When I booked the 25 people, Grand Gatherings was still open and while we were told that our party may be split up, because they gave me the option of the first or last sittings and we took first, we were all able to sit together.

The places I would focus on if you want to sit together is Cape May Cafe or Ohana's.

At 1900 Park Faire we were divided up into 3 round tables. Next to each other but just not the same.

Over all Ohana's was the best experience and the only place we were able to get a pic of the whole group with Pluto.

We did a trip this past April for 11 :thumbsup2 My FIL took care of booking the packages and I took charge of the ADRs.

I would just designate one person to book the rooms. Give that person all the info you need to book - names, ages, cc #, address, phone number. Make sure that they make a note in each reservation that you want adjoining or connecting rooms. If you are trying for FD I would definately book it all at the same time to make sure all the rooms you need are in the same resort.

SIL and I got together and decided dates, how many days in the parks and what restaurants we wanted to try. I would not overplan with a group that big - maybe plan on one TS meal a day together. Many restaurants say they will seat you at separate tables but we only had that happen at Le Cellier and that was just because I could not book a party of 11 (did 5 and 6) and it was a super busy night. We did not want to wait longer than we had to for a big table, still we sat next to each other.

Hi there we have taken 48 people once and then 29. On big groups if you book a group rate you can not get free dining. We tried both times. We did Chef Mickey. We also set it up to take the Kilimanjaro's Safari at the same time. That was fun. We also had a dessert party and watched Fantasmic. That was great.

What's the most cost effective way for rooms with a group this size?

The most cost effective will be to book all rooms together or as separate reservations by family for dates that will give you the largest discount. Group rates don't come into play until you need 10 rooms or more. :-) Reservations can still be linked however.
