so yesterday my 6th grader raised her hand in Spanish class and asked if they could have a Cinco de Mayo party.

the teaccher was impressed.

so guess who's planning the party?

any ideas?

How about "make your own burrito"? They tend to be not as messy as tacos. You have to assemble the soft tortillas, ground meat, shredded cheese, salsa, rice, beans, whatever else. Hopefully, they're a little too old for a pinata. Can't think of what else - I'm sure you'll get more ideas here.

Give everyone a bottle of authentic Mexican water :earseek:

It's short notice, but Oriental Trading's new catalog has a Fiesta section. When I was in HS, our Spanish teacher showed us how to make homemade guacamole (I don't remember how, but you could google it). Chips and salsa is an easy snack.

Good luck!

Kids always love pinatas.

A pinata is a great idea!

(sixth grade boys love to smash stuff! )

<font color=navy>How 'bout

Mex music

throw hats in the middle & have them dance the "Hat Dance"
Pinata
confetti in eggs & smash each other (if this is outside)
red-green-white decorations
have them come dressed in Mex colors & costumes, if they can
play loteria - which is Mex bingo & win small prizes
label things in room or whatever in spanish

Don't forget the chili pepper lights and the tequila lollipops with the worm in it.:)

A few Texas suggestions where Cinco is almost a state holiday...

1. Find some mariachi music on the net. You have to have good music for any party.

2. Guacamole: Mash an avacado in a small bowl with a little lemon juice, salt and a big spoonful of sour cream. Tastes great. Just don't let it sit too long or it turns brownish.

3. Chilli Pepper lights Need ambiance for a good party.

4. Taco-Bell is American food not mexican. If they serve it at Taco bell, you probably won't find it south of the border.

5. Sopapias with Honey Mmmmmmmmmmmmm (fried soft tortias with cinnimom (man my spelling is bad today and I'm a writer!) and sugar. Much less messy than burritos at school. PM me for more info. I have the receipe at home

6. With enough entertainment (music, hat dance, pinata) and chips and dip, who needs a messy heavy meal at school!

7. Try to find a VHS/DVD version of Ballet folklorico (Mexican National Dance Company) the kids will learn some mexican culture as well.

I may be wrong, but giving 12 year olds Tequila might, just might result in foster care for your child. Songs De Mexico and Sopipillas sound great and My DD will have a pinata at every party she has until she is too embarrassed to have them. Little goof had to be born on April 30. I was willing to wait for a cinco de mayo baby!
