I am planning for my daughter's birthday party menu, and need a few more ideas. I was hoping for things that I could possibly prepare the night before or earlier during the day so that I could greet the guests as they arrive. What would you suggest and serve?

Is this a party of little ones with Mom & Dad? What age group are you having at your party?

My daughter will be two years old and this party will have a variety of ages from the little ones all the way up to their senior years. I usually make a variety of different foods-mostly things that go along with rice-chicken, beef, tossed salad and such.
I already have the birthday cake and other desserts picked out, but one or two more would never hurt.

I was thinking of doing a fruit platter or fruit bowl. We'll see what fruits are in season and avaliable at the store. One of the items that I will be making are barbeque/teriyaki beef sticks which are on skewers.

what about the rolled sandwiches with tortillas, those are always a big hit at parties. Easy to eat and kids like them

Might just make some of those. I have been eatting these rolls alot for lunch these days.

Just some advice.... go simple! Don't spend tons of time preparing foods for little ones.. they probably won't eat it! I've always done very simple things such as Goldfish crackers or chips. The fruit platter was a good idea as well. Kids also love those little peanutbutter and jelly sandwhiches. How about a veggie platter for the adults.

I'm all about wandering the aisles of Sams and buying the premade frozen stuff =) They have some great ideas that are inexpensive, SUPER easy to put together, and stress free for a mom!!

So I'm not much help ;)

Is she having a theme, like a certain character or something?

Yes, it's Dora the Explorer so we will have the chips and salsa and tacos, but most of the adults will not eat those items, so I am going to bbq and such.

I just did a total before hand birthday party for my DD in June
wanted time to spend with guests and kids
spiral ham warmed in oven
pan of baked ziti
sloppy joes in crock pot
pierogies with sauteed onions and butter in crock pot
tossed salad and macaroni salad
pickles and olive tray
veggies tray and dip
chips and pretzels
cashews

we had 16+ people and it went great

For my daughter's 1st birthday party, we had over a 100 guests and we had made around 20 different dishes. So this party will only have around 30 guests, so I won't have to make that many things, and want to keep it much simplier.

I do a lot of cookouts, a favorite that always goes, and it seems like all ages enjoy are English muffin Pizzas and chicken wings/homemade terriaki marinade, homemade chineese rice, baked beans/ cornbread, corn on the cob....just to name a few
I'll give you the recipe's if you'd like, and a 24 hours salad, a triffle for dessert. They are all do ahead type things.

I would love to have the recipe for the corn bread. We do chicken wings also...usually my aunty makes korean chicken since that is one of her specialities.
Could you also give me the salad recipe. TIA.

Yummm! I would love to have the recipes for english muffin pizzas and wings with marinade. I think my family would enjoy both of those!!

Sams has those little tiny eclairs that you just thaw and eat. GREAT dessert idea for the grown-ups. YUMMMMMMMMM!

Pasta salad!

parmasean cheese
italian salad dressing
pasta
olives
chicken
Frozen carrots or broccoli
Garbanzo beans

Feel free to sub- out the meat / veg for your personal faves, but this salad has always gotten raves. (DD alsways sneaks a bowl pre-party)

How about a chili dip. You use a bar I think it 16oz of cream cheese you melt that for a minute so you can spread it on the bottom and a can of Hormell chili no beans and microwave it for 6 minutes with top on and top with cheddar cheese and eat with chips

Or cucumber sandwiches-you use those tine bread slices spread on cream cheese and top with a slice of cucumber

or good old deviled eggs

The eclairs are really, really good! But, if you have someone like me at your party.....not too many other people would get any!! (Hmm, they don't have a smiley of a piggy, do they?)

I always do a mixed fruit, meat and cheese display. Depending on how sophisticated the pallets of the guests are...you can do the normal cheddar, monterey jack, etc or you can go upscale with brie, camembert, chevre, etc. I take some Italian sausauge salami and cut it up as well. I make a beautiful tiered display using fruit, sausage, crackers and wine bottles.

Another easy appetizer is a modification of the chili-cream cheese. I take a can of crab meat and mix it with cocktail sauce and lemon juice. Take this mixture and put it all over a large block of creamcheese with a hole in the center. Place this on a dish with lettuce and put shrimp and lemon wedges all around the perimeter of the block. Fill the hole in the cream cheese block with cocktail sauce. Place a dish of different type crackers next to this and you have a great display.

Both these can be done way beforehand.

Another thing I've done is a mashed potato bar. Take mashed potatoes in a big bowl surrounded by all kinds of toppings: sour cream, chives, cheese, bacon, steamed vegetables, etc. Much of this can be done way ahead of time. If you have extra wine or martini glasses its a nice touch to put these out for people to make their tatotinis!!!

Can you guess that I'm an event planner....I have hundreds of ideas...let me know if you need any more!!
