Next Sunday is the baby shower, we have all the food lined up. The cake ordered and my sisters are bringing a tray of cookies. (We are talking 80 guests including a few children) Can anyone recommend to me another desert we can put out not everyone eats cake. It must be a very simple one as there is so much to do as it is.

Your suggestions and reciepes would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you every one for your punch receipes too. We will be using one of yours and look forward to sampling it. :teeth:

What about some kind of fruit salad - this one is good:

Fresh Fruit Salad

4 cups fresh strawberries, halved
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 kiwifruit, peeled & sliced
2 medium firm bananas, sliced
2 cups seedless grapes, halved
8 ounces plain or vanilla yogurt
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

In a large bowl, combine the fresh strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, bananas and grapes. In a small bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, sugar and vanilla; mix well. Serve over fruit.

8-10 servings.

Or, even easier, just get a premade fruit tray from the grcoery store.

I make this one all the time, it's very simple. Take choclate pudding and let it set, then mix in a tub of coolwhip. It makes it almost like mousse. Then I pour it into whatever I plan on serving it in and let it set up again. It won't set like pudding but it will set a bit. Then I top it differently depending on what I feel like. Sometimes I top it with more coolwhip, sometimes sliced strawberries. The most popular topping is crushed heath bars. It's a very simple dessert but most people think it takes a lot of work. I let them think what they want. :smooth:

chocolate covered strawberries are always nice and very easy to make. Maybe put out some pieces of fruit, too. They could look nice as both decoration and something for someone who doesn't care for anything sweeter. Or you could always make fruit spears...just cut up some pineapple, canteloupe, etc, and use bamboo skewers. Again, they look pretty and are so yummy.

Go to Sams CLub or Costco, in the freezer section they have tubs of bite size chocolate eclaires, cream puffs and assorted cheesecake bites. Lay them all out on a pretty tray and you are done. We did this at my sisters baby shower a few months ago and it was a huge hit.

how 'bout strawberry shortcake? I use the recipe on bisquick (I use the reduced fat kind) so you could make a bunch of those, a bowl of strawberries and cool whip - everyone can make their own.

Heavenly Hash

2-24oz cans Fruit Cocktail
2-16oz Sour Cream
2 or 3 bags Mini Marshmallows

Mix altogether in a bowl, refrigerate over night.

Cake-like, but a nice refreshing alternative:
Lemon Cheesecake Squares
1 (18.25 oz) Lemon Cake Mix
1/2 Cup butter
3 Large eggs
2 (8 oz) Package Cream Cheese
1/2 Cup sugar
1/2 Teaspoon vanilla
2 Teaspoon lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Mix together: Cake mix, butter and 1 egg until crumbly.
Press in bottom of 9x13 pan, sprayed with cooking spray.
Bake for 8 minutes.
Beat cream cheese, 2 eggs, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice until smooth and fluffy.
Spread over hot crust. Bake 25 minutes.
Cut into squares.
OPTIONAL: dust with powdered sugar.

Or, try:
Fruit Pizza
1 (18-ounce) package refrigerated sugar cookie dough
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup granulate sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Various Fruits: Strawberries, Kiwi, Peaches, Blueberries, are attractive.
1/4 cup orange marmalade, peach or apricot preserves
1 tablespoon orange juice or water

Preheat oven to 375
Cut dough into 1/8-inch slices; line 14-inch pizza pan with slices and press to form a crust.
Bake in for 12 minutes or until lightly browned; cool.
Blend cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla. Spread over cookie crust.
Arrange fruit over cream cheese. Starburst design or spiral.
Combine marmalade or preserves with orange juice and drizzle over fruit. Chill for 1 hour before serving.

I've put on my thinking cap. If I come up with any others, I will share.
Have a beautiful shower!

I second the mini eclairs or cream puffs from Sam's. They are soooooo yummy and all you do is put them on a pretty plate 30 minutes before serving. I guarantee a big hit with those!

buy a nice box of chocolates and put them on a pretty tray.

How about this?

1 can of Cherry pie filling
1 can of crushed pineapple
1 can of Eagle Brand Sweetened condensed milk
1 lg tub of Cool Whip
Chopped nuts (optional)

Mix the pie filling, pineapple, and Eagle Brand together and fold in the Cool Whip. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.

You can use Strawberry or Blueberry pie filling if you would prefer.

It is so quick, easy, and good! We've used it at Christenings, Birthdays, Showers...it's always a hit...

I also am thinking on the same lines as the poster who suggested the fruit salad. Although I was thinking more on the lines of fruit with a dip, or may fruit kabobs.

When I am in a hurry to put together a "fruit" type of dessert, I can buy at my grocery store a pineapple that is already peeled and cored. It takes no time to cut it into chunks. Then take toothpicks and maraschino cherries and you're done.

Another easy idea, in case someone just doesn't like cake is just sherbert.
