Partial Dues Payment with CC - Before Jan 15th?

Hi all,

We have a Chase Sapphire Reserve and only recently did I learn that the $300/yr travel credit can work with timeshares including DVC dues it seems.

We are set up on the monthly autopay by checking account and I have been basically just finding the best deals on gift cards and paying that way and getting the slight discount. I went to make a partial payment to use our travel credit and it says Autopay accounts cannot do partial payments by CC.

So, none of that is really news, I found other posts discussing that part. But I thought that I could maybe cancel Autopay and make the payment and then put it back in place. The DVC site warned that if I am not paying in full, then removing Autopay may impose fees. But it also said if after January 15th.

My question then is, can I disable Autopay safely right now, charge $250 to the CSR, then re-enable Autopay without it breaking everything? Or will it be pointless and still only let me make a full balance dues payment by CC even after disabling Autopay?

Hope that makes sense. I couldn't find this specific situation in searching, so sorry if it's a repeat.

Have you tried using your CC using the same process as you've been using for your gift cards (pay by individual contract)? I thought I read that would work. Don't know why CC wouldn't work if gift cards do.

Oh yeah, that's what brought me here. When I went to do it, it says you can't do a partial CC payment with active AutoPay. But it doesn't have an issue with Gift Cards. Guessing it's to prevent someone from doing 12 small transactions and all the CC fees.

I am guessing if I remove AutoPay that I could then do a partial payment, just don't want it to give me trouble if I then go to reactivate AutoPay.

I don’t think it would hurt to disable and then redo but have never tried.

I think you need certain questions answered by DVC before cancelling auto pay and trying to make a credit card payment for part of the dues:

1. Does DVC treat cancellation of autopay as an act which means you must thereafter pay all dues remaining for the year at once?

2. Can you actually pay just part of your annual dues via credit card and then set up autopay for the rest? Related: can a credit card be used to pay only part of your dues, e.g., if I remember correctly DVC began a program in 2020 under which you could pay all your dues at once with a credit card, but I do not know if they allow only part of the dues to be paid via credit card,

I tried it and it works. Canceled it, made a $150 partial, payment on my CC. Then set up auto pay again.

You are all so amazing, thank you for giving it a shot. Between the many warnings it gave and the history of Disney IT issues I see on here, it got me into a loop of overthinking what could go wrong if I tried.

I went through the same process and so far all seems good. Payment made on CC and then AutoPay reactivated. Thanks again and happy holidays!

So the trick of setting up auto pay but then going in ahead of the due date and paying by credit card no longer works?

You can always pay off the balance by CC at any time with auto pay. But, you can not make a partial payment with them when you have it.

So, this allowed to make a partial payment and then go back to autopay. Unlike when you do partial payments with gift cards, which pushes out your next payment, this just recalculates the monthly amount after you pay so that you will pay less each month.

I do not know how it works once you pass the actual due date because canceling autopay then could Cause a penalty.

You just have to use your $300 Chase Credit before your Credit card renews and you pay your new annual fee. So I would pay everything by Disney Gift Card except the last $300 and then pay that by the Sapphire. I have done that before, but I no longer use the Sapphire.

Will the system let you cancel, pay with CC, then re-enroll in Auto-Pay AFTER the 1/15 due date? In other words, do this every month?

That I do not know and something I certainly wouldn’t be willing to try.

Once canceled after the due date..which is Feb 15th before penalties kick in..everything would be due so I don’t know if it would trigger the penalty or not.

I have auto pay. I have two Disney gift cards given to me for Christmas presents. Can I use them towards my dues without disabling auto pay? Do I need to call member services to apply the Disney gift cards?

Yes. You can use a GC without disabling auto-pay. Click on the payment button, then pay by contract and fill in the amount. You’ll get a GC payment option. This won’t work with a credit card payment.

Wow, so you can earn $300 and receive the 3 point/$ Ultimate Rewards with this transaction?

I don’t have this card, but some have suggested that the points earned are worth 2 cents per point. At such a rate, that would be a 6% discount on fees before getting the $300 credit.

Lots of ways to look at credit cards, but for me that would wipe out the annual fee for this card entirely.

If you autopay with this card could you also earn the travel credit?

CSR points have a 50% bonus. They’re worth 1.5¢ per point. A $10,000 charge will get you 10,000 points, worth $150 towards travel purchases.

The nice thing about using points for air travel is that the airline sees it as a cash purchase, and you also get airline miles/points for the trip, as well as credit towards airline status.

Agree, however it does appear that if a $10,000 charge were made in payment of DVC annual dues, that this would be assigned a travel valuation, and therefore 30,000 points would be credited to the ultimate rewards account?

As an aside, many points valuation websites will list Chase ultimate rewards points as having a value of two cents per point based upon some redemption options. Your example of using points for air purchases on the Chase website is otherwise correct as valued at 1.5 cent per point.

Hope I’m interpreting this correctly?

Yes to all.

3x points on travel charges.

The points valuations are important considerations when deciding which card to use.

Yep, only thing to keep in mind is Chase fixed the "bonus" of getting 3x points on the $300 travel purchase a long time ago. My charge cleared (and I already got my credit!), but I only got 3x points on $4.62 of the $255 I charged because I only had $250.38 of my credit left. $4.62 x 3 is 13.86, which is how many points the charge shows I earned.

So if you had the full $300 travel credit available and charged exactly $300 to your CSR for dues, you would get the $300 credit but earn 0 points on the charge. If you charged $500 you would get the $300 credit, and then 600 points (remaining $200 x 3pts/$).

Hopefully that makes sense. I saw it noted above that you could get the 3x points on the $300 charge/credit, and wanted to clear that up.

That said, it does code as 3x so if you want to keep it simple it's definitely a good card to pay your dues with. CSR points are definitely useful. Aside from airlines, one of my favorite redemption uses is transferring points to Hyatt hotels. Hyatt rooms often start at 5000 points, which with how easy chase points earn is pretty small.

It might make sense to put $300 on your credit card, and the remainder using Dis Gift Cards via Target?

Thanks for the reminder... When is the last day that you can make payment before late dues? Feb 15? Or Jan 15?
