is it possible to upgrade a myw ticket purchased on parksavers to AP in order to take advantage of AP discounts?

Yes. Go to any Guest Relations location or park ticket booth and tell them that you want to upgrade to an annual pass. Bring photo ID for anyone 18 years old and up. (Additionally: If you want Florida Resident APs and don't have Florida IDs, make sure to bring proof of residency. If you want DVC APs, bring your DVC card.) Know the price you should pay - it's the difference between the gate price of your current ticket and the gate price of the AP you want. Make sure to figure in tax. You do not 'need' to use the ticket before upgrading, although you're welcome to do so if you desire. The upgrade just needs to be done before the end of the last day on your ticket. The expiration date should be one year from the date of the ticket's first use, or the day the upgrade is done if the ticket is unused at the time of the upgrade.

this is our exact plan! already bought parksavers tix! Upgrade will be done April 18th either at Mk or Ak:) we arrive the 17th but holding off a day to upgrade. good luck!

What if you want to book an AP RO discount but already bought a parksavers ticket?

Thanks for asking this, @HatboxHaint.

I'm wondering if anyone could answer whether or not it would be best if I get an AP? I have a trip to Disney coming, but I might be trying for another time to go sometime toward November or sometime next year, and then I have a trip to Disneyland in February with friends. I think I saw that the AP for both parks is upward of $1500, so that's crazy insane expensive to me. We already have our tickets for September, none for November or for February.

Upgrades of third-party tickets can only be done in person. So, you're out of luck on booking and AP rate room until after you upgrade.

No problem, whatsoever.

You can BOOK an AP room without owning an AP.

Once you check in, you can upgrade your tickets to AP.
If (IF) anyone at the resort wants to see an AP, you can stop by the desk the next day
and show the AP (however, that AP will show in your MDE account, anyway.)

Sorry, but that's not the case.
It has never been necessary to "own" an AP in order to book an upcoming AP room.
It was just necessary to own the AP during the trip that was booked.

So, you're saying you can check into a room booked at the AP rate before you upgrade to an AP?

This was my experience. I purchased 7-day PH tickets from Parksavers in January 2016, with plans to upgrade to an AP upon arrival at WDW. In early February, I called and booked a room-only reservation using the AP discount. The phone CM didn't ask for any information about my AP status - just told me I'd need to have the AP at check-in. I checked in online and received a text upon arrival in Orlando stating that I could go straight to my room - no mention of needing to see my AP. After stopping briefly at the resort to drop off some items in our room, we went to DHS and I upgraded my ticket to an AP at the Guest Relations office there. I meant to stop at the front desk when we returned to the resort, but it was late so we went straight back to our room. The next evening, I remembered and stopped by. The CM looked at my card, looked up my reservation information on her computer, and said I was good to go. It didn't seem like it would have ever mattered, but I was worried that it might affect my final bill if they never saw my AP during my visit and I didn't want to risk it.

I really want to stay at AKL this next trip and really need the AP discount to come thru with a lower rate to do that. I already have BLT booked via renting points. I screwed up and should have rented points at AKL too but missed the 7 month window. We'll be at BLT 1st for a few days and I can upgrade then, that would be before the potential AKL stay. So this all works out. Thanks @Robo and @beesly!

It has been that way for years, well over a decade, maybe "always."

Many reports on these boards, plus my personal experience.
They don't care if you buy the AP in advance, just that you buy it.

It seldom does.
Your AP info becomes part of your WDW file info.
Once you get the AP, anyone at WDW with access to your info can see that you have it.

I can confirm that this was the case as far back as 1996. You just needed to meet the requirements for and AP / FL AP during your stay to qualify for the room rates.

For day to day discounts, you used to be asked to show a discount card but currently they only you with a single PassHolder RFID card that covers both. As others have indicated, you also get a free MagicBand that you can customize, it will show up on your MDE account and you can customize it, and then it will be shipped to your address.

Yes, we booked and check in to 2 resorts before we went to the ticket counter to upgrade to AP.
As a matter of fact, in all our hotel stays since getting an AP never once, not a single time, have they asked to see our AP or any other discount card.
I believe they just assume that since you have access to book an AP rate you are qualified to get the AP rate.
