Parking

How do parking charges work? We will have a rental car one night in the middle of our week at CSR. Do we need to tell the front desk/get a pass or something in advance?

Nope, just use your magic band to get in/out.
The gates automatically raise when you depart. The MagicBands are only needed upon entry. So it's a good idea to make sure that you check with the front desk to make sure you're only charged for the applicable nights if you only have a vehicle for part of your stay.

What is wrong with parking fees? They just discourage people from driving to the parks which is a good thing.
Nope, they don't. The parking fees are for overnight parking, not day parking. But if you aren't a guest of that resort, either an overnight guest or dining guest, you shouldn't be parking there anyway.

Not sure about near WDW but in some cities around airports you can find hotels that will allow you to keep your car there for a week for a small fee as you travel after you stay there the first night. I'd suggest trying to find one of these, uber over to the resort then grab the car on your way home and go. You can also probably find regular people willing to rent parking on their property for a cheap amount, I like the Spot app in Boston for apartment complexes that do this but there are other businesses like Spot Hero - it's sort of like Air B&B for parking. Lots of places are looking for extra income so it's a dovetail win win.
