If I want to drive to another hotel to explore and eat at their quick service restaurant, do I need to do anything special? Do I need to say anything to the guard at the gate to checkin? I don't need to stay long, so taking the bus seems like a huge hassle.

The guard may ask why you are there. If it is a monorail loop or Boardwalk restaurant, they may ask you to park in a remote lot or pay, even for QS dining.

Just tell the guard you are there to eat at xx place and to see the resort. They should let you through or point you to where they want you to go.

Just have your ID ready when you arrive at the gate. I see many people pull up and they have to dig out their ID. I know when I drive while at WDW, I just pull it out when I get in the car heading to a resort.

Yes, have your ID ready, some resorts ask and some don't and it varies from my experience from time to time. I have never gone to a resort for a QS only a restaurant with ADR so I've never had to pay.
