I know if you stay at a Disney resort, you get to park for free at the parks. How does this work? Do they give you a parking pass when you check in?

Yes.

It's the resort parking pass that you keep on your car while parked at the resort,it'll say the resort name with the check out date, when you get to the park just show it and they'll wave you through.

Thanks for asking this. I have never been there with my own car before but we are driving down in August. I too was wondering how this worked.

I think parking at the resorts is free anyway. So you could always go as a visitor.

Not quite. You can only park at a resort if you are a guest of that resort, or if you are visiting that resort to eat or to shop (in the latter case, you have just three hours to park before you get towed).

This rule may or may not be enforced, depending on the season and the resort (high chance of it being enforced at monorail resorts during high season, low chance of it being enforced at value resorts at low season).

Well, yes. And hence, parking is free if you are visiting a resort. You don't need to be a WDW resort guest. There are some time restrictions but it's still free.

Does this work for parking at other resorts as well?
It really has no bearing on parking at other resorts. Some say it does....but CMs have told me that it doesn't. Just because you have a, let's say, BW parking permit, that doesn't allow you to drive to the CR, park your car there and head to the MK for the day.
You can drive to the CR, park there, enjoy a meal or shopping there, but then you are expected to drive away. You could then drive over to the TTC and park there for the day...free of course.
Extended parking, at a resort you are not staying at, is not supposed to be allowed..per Disney. Can you do it? Probably. But, there are times of year, at various resorts, where this is strongly enforced, so be prepared to be denied at some times.
