This is our price zone.
We are a family of 5. (15, 13, 9)
We like being right across the street.
The vibe I've gotten is that Park Vue might be a bit nicer with a bit nicer breakfast? And an outdoor pool versus a small indoor pool. (we aren't driving so the parking situation doesn't affect us)
Desert Inn gets us a room with 4 queen beds and 2 bathrooms, but again I'm getting the feeling Park Vue might be a bit nicer with a better pool?

And thanks so much to all who have been putting up with my 20 questions today!!!

PVI is significantly nicer in my opinion. I'm about to pick up my kiddo from her sports practice. I'll write more when I get back.

We just returned from out stay at the PVI, we loved it. The location was great and we ate breakfast there every morning too.

Okay, I'm back from getting DD :)

Here's my run down of Park Vue vs Desert Inn and Suites.

http://disboards.com/threads/cant-decide-between-three-hotels-at-dl-gate.3475350/#post-54989381

(1) The walk cannot be beat. I mean, yes, BWPPI is just a crosswalk away (a crosswalk that everyone ignores). And DI&S is only a hotel away... But both BWPPI and DI&S are long hotels, and I'll admit I'm a bit lazy after walking 13+ miles in a day a Disneyland! I don't like seeing the front of my motel and then having to keep on walking...and walking...and walking to get to my room.

(2) The beds are super-comfy. Pillow top softness with firm mattresses below; but not overly firm. They are just perfect. And after a long day, sinking into bed is wonderful. I found DI&S beds very hard. Hard enough that I considered sleeping on the floor. I also considered taking the bus to Target to get an air mattress. You shouldn't need to consider that on vacation.

(3) Hot water is a wonderful thing. The easiest way I avoid waking up with sore legs is to take a shower or soak in warm water after we get back to the motel. I also like warm showers in the morning. And I like taking a dip in the hot tub without getting a rash. I got a nasty case of folliculitis at the hot tub at DI&S.

(4) Speaking of showers, PVI has some wonderfully soft and large towels that actually serve to cover me while I dry off. Not bath sheet size, of course, but they aren't those tiny towels, and they aren't scratchy.

(5) PVI has an on-site store, and Cold Stone Creamery. It was easy to stop off at the store, or the vending machines, to get a $1.75 soda (thereby saving $1.50 from park prices). I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit I ran to their store in my pajamas for a quick snack more than once. And, they have a huge selection of souvenirs. Of course, they can't have anything that says "Disneyland" but "California" with Mickey and Minnie seems to make the point for many people. They also have potentially-forgotten necessities, like the hairbrush my DD didn't think of packing and the toothbrush I forgot.

(6) Breakfast. DI&S has a meager offering for breakfast: 2 cereals (neither safe for my family), toast, apples/oranges (cut, so you can't take them with you for a snack), packaged danishes, juice, milk, and weak coffee. My BFF isn't a coffee snob, and makes her coffee pretty weak, and even she complained that their coffee was gross. By contrast, PVI has hot items (over the years, we've had biscuits and gravy, waffles, fried potatoes, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, eggs, and more), along with fruits, cereals, yogurt, toast/bread, coffee, teas, juices, milk, and more. While we aren't huge breakfast eaters, it still saves us a fair amount!

(7) Customer service. This is where places earn my business or lose my business. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly 4 days before my Disneyland vacation. I was booked for my 2nd stay at DI&S. Obviously, I had to cancel the trip. But, my bad, I forgot to cancel the hotel. It was 36 hours before my stay. I understand, I understand--it wasn't 48 hours, so legally they had every right. But, my young-ish father in law had just died, and they thought I would think about cancelling my hotel reservation ust hours after my father in law died?!? The manager said they would refund the money "if we can rent the room," and then held the money "pending" for 10 days before finally charging us for the room. I understand, they had the legal right. But it's not like they are a huge chain. They had the ability to just cancel it and not charge me. And there was no way for me to prove or disprove that they were or weren't able to rent my room, so I had no legal recourse. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that when their beloved patriarch of their family dies that they are treated with more care and understanding than my family was! We had 4 future stays booked with them. Of course, my money doesn't make or break them, but, again, they lost all our future bookings! At PVI, they have always acted like I was their only guest. They called to make sure I didn't need anything. They left DH and I a sweet little present for our honeymoon stay. When there was a billing issue (my dad was trying to pay for a night of my honeymoon, and wasn't getting his desire across on the phone, so I got there, explained he situation to the desk person when my dad was on the phone, and she immediately got the night taken off my credit card and on to my dad's. They have also opened our room for us, after already checking out, when I realized I had forgotten my engagement ring in the room, and then even helped look for it! (They found it :) )... Oh, and they do military discounts, and returning guest discounts. It always feels like PVI wants my business. Not so much at DI&S.

So, there's my dissertation on why I love PVI.

We are a family of 5 with kids similar in age to yours. We like both PVI and DI. It really depends on the room your looking into at PVI. If it's anything other than the 2 room suites, I think it will be too small for your family. I love the 4 queen rooms with 2 bathrooms at DI, but room size is the only advantage DI has over PVI. (Well, the only advantage other than a better rate at DI- usually.)

Thanks for taking so much time and giving me so much info lalasmama! You've completely confirmed what I was suspecting, and gave me even more. It makes me think it's a no brainer - then I think 4 beds and 2 bathrooms! Ugh. WDW and DL so different. (duh. LOL) At World we are in the park so much and the room is usually just a place to sleep. Once in awhile we do build in a day or two to enjoy the resort. Not what we would do at either of these places. :P Cal-Pie it's good to hear from you in the same boat. I have 4 park days planned in late August. Will I be returning to the room midday for a nap and a swim? We've done that in the heat of August in WDW. Then maybe the quality of the room is more important since it's not just night time? (And the pool is a little better at PVI? Too bad there is not DL waterpark!:P) Or will I be in the parks full time at DL? I emailed PVI asking what the square footage of the room is. They haven't answered yet (the 2 room was not available that I could see. I'm going to email about that too) We have stayed at POR in the 5 person room. It's tight but we manage. But is POR bigger than PVI? The PVI room is the double queen bunk bed.

Gosh I can't even imagine how overwhelmed folks are coming from DL to WDW - as I feel so lost going in this other direction that is supposed to be easier?

I was planning to arrive on a Saturday and leave on a Saturday. I think that works for the arrival. We will need a day to recover after flying all day Saturday...then we can hit parks on the weekdays. But with plans for 4 days that leaves a full Friday of nothing to do and no budget (and no car) to go do anything except walk around DTD. Maybe we should come home on Friday since neither hotel is a hang around at the resort kind of place! :-P

That is so ME!!! And why I haven't braved WDW yet even though I am now living on the East Coast!. you are going to have a GREAT time. :tiptoe:

you may have better luck calling with your questions and asking about the room being available, sometimes you can get a better rate by calling also :)

Call, call, call! We usually stay in a suite (can't remember the name--has a room with 2 queens, and a sofa bed in the other room, with a kitchenette) and they don't have it in the reservation system for some reason. But, when we call, they have always had the room available. The pool area is small but nice. Let me see if I can find a picture of it on my computer (on phone now).

As far as a non-park day, there's always a movie theater in Downtown Disney to take up a few hours, the pool can take up a little time, and Anaheim Gardenwalk is a small walk away for additional shopping.

So I've held two places. I just don't know what to do lalasmama!

Dates are 8/20 Saturday - 8/27 Saturday.

PVI has the 2 queen bunk bed room that I'm holding.
If I shave a day off the end I can get the 2 queen/sofa bed 2 suite room (I had been toying with coming home a day early since the plan has been to do 4 days in parks)
3 suite room is unavailable.

Plus I have that Desert Inn held with the 4 queens 2 bathrooms. My husband can't get past 2 bathrooms, I can't get past your review and recommendation of PVI

Any possibility of staying at PVI in the 2Q/bunk room at PVI and then moving into the suite? I stayed in the 2Q/bunk room with my 3 kids when they were really little, but I think we'd kill each other if we tried it now:crazy2:. It's really no bigger than a 2Q room, it just has less floor space because of the bunk. It was even hard to find a space to park a small umbrella stroller in there when my youngest was a baby.

DI&S is really not a bad option either. Sorry I'm no help! I have the same struggle with my family of 5 every time we book...but my husband, like yours, loves having 2 bathrooms.

ETA: Just one more option to confuse you;-) A couple weeks ago, we stayed at Tropicana is 2 adjoining rooms. It worked out great. They do have a 5+night special where you get $20 off per room per night. It made our 2 rooms cheaper than a suite at PVI or DI&S for our dates. Just something to look into.

The suite is avail 8/20 - 8/26, the 2q bunk is avail 8/20-8/27. I'm planning a flight recovery day on 8-21/Sunday and visiting DTD and such. So I do have one day of nothing built in already. Park days were going to be Monday-Thursday. So we totally can come home on Friday. My frugal side thinks of the savings on room, dog boarding, disney cost food! But of course my devilish side thinks of adding a day on and going to the park for 5 days. :-P

Here's a (kind of) picture of the pool area at Park Vue... Clearly, the pool wasn't the purpose of the picture, LOL, but you can get an idea of what it looks like there.

Definitely not a whole-day destination, but nice for the a little time relaxing!

If you want to stay the extra day and you haven't got your tickets yet, getawaytoday.com has get the 5th day free on their tickets :) so you wouldn't really be out money to get the extra day....also I know you were kind of looking at staying across the street, BUT stanford inn and suites has 2 queen bunk bed rooms some with one bath and some with 2 and the price is great, its a little further away but getawaytoday.com has a good deal on ART tickets also and on this hotel :) I just booked for our June trip and it saved $500 of what I was going to pay at PVI which I love but we are trying to save money this time

Oooohhh, I might shave a day off for the 2Q/sofabed suite, LOL! Here's some pictures of that suite....

Here's the kitchen/dining/outer vanity area:

Here's a corner of the sofa bed, with the door into the 2Q room

I don't have a good picture of the 2Q part of the room... But it looks like a basic 2Q room at any hotel.

The second bathroom would be nice! The 2Q/sofabed suite at Park Vue has plenty of mirror space, but only 1 toilet and shower, which could be an issue. It hasn't been an issue with our family, as we only do 2 showers in the morning, so we do it in shifts--DH and I shower while DD is waking up, then DH and I can get ready to go while DD is showering. While DD is getting ready to go, DH and I will go grab breakfast for all of us, and bring it back to the room, or she will meet us at the breakfast area.

I stayed at Tropicana in December, and it could be another great option. It's close (maybe 2 minutes more than Desert Inn and Suites), and has adjoining rooms available (that would get you 4Q, 2 bathrooms, but no sitting area). I have pictures if you want ;)
