any tips on how to do this the cheapest/safest/decent hotel? are there coupon codes for this type of reservation?

I have stayed at the la Quinta before and it was ok at DTW. Last trip we atayed at the Westin right at the airport, it cost more for a night but included 10 days parking in stead of 7 like the other hotels so it saved us money in the end. The ther hotels charge for days over 7 days to park.

We like the Sheraton Four Points. The rooms are big enough for all 5 of us and they have an indoor pool for the kids to burn out some energy. We usually pay around $100-120 and that includes a week's parking at a secure lot with round-the-clock shuttle service.

I haven't seen discounts for parking packages. I think the parking inclusion is viewed as a discount in itself so they don't add additional discounts other than the usual seasonal and nightly variation in rates.

We've used both the Fairfield Inn and the Springhill Suites (both are Marriott brands) when we flew out of Detroit. We've always got a room for $100 or less on the park and fly rate and it includes 8 nights of parking. The lots are either across the street (Springhill) or right next door (Fairfield) and the shuttle takes you from your car to the terminal. We've used them 4 times and never once had a problem. I highly recommend either of them...just check which one has a better price:thumbsup2.

Oh, and your parking time doesn't start until you bring your car to the lot. So, you park at the hotel when you stay there and then drive your car to the park n fly lot on the day of your flight. The hotels are right off the highway and it is an easy drive from Grand Rapids. The only traffic we ever hit was right around Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor and that was only a brief back up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check it all out. I wish flights out of GR weren't so darn expensive! Not sure how on earth we will get to our cruise in August! Outrageous prices....been checking since we booked three months ago!

I did see a ding for GRR to MCO for 124 I believe it was.

Not DTW, but I am flying out of BWI in July. I used parksleephotels.com to book my overnight preflight stay and 14 days of parking. They had better rates than both the hotel website and parksleepfly.com. Plus if you use the promo code PSH13 you get an extra $5.00 off. They list plenty of options at various price points for DTW. Hope this helps.

OP did you check Flint? I know they have cheaper flights and sometimes they are same as DTW.

I have checked everything! Flint was actually about the same price. I ended up booking SW out of Grand Rapids tonight. Ended up using all my southwest points, plus some cash, but I don't have parking or an extra night of a hotel, and DH is happy because he doesn't have to drive to Detroit! Now just have to figure out the most cost effective way of getting to the port of Miami from FLL, and hotels before and after cruise! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Another option would be to stay nearby in Canton (15 mins from airport) and then park at QwikPark. QwikPark has a downloadable coupon for $8 per day. We live in Canton and recommend this for everyone since our nephew stayed by the airport and had his van stolen outside his hotel room. Canton is safer.
