Park hoppers and room key

How do you go about putting your park hoppers on your room key? Do you have to buy your park hoppers at check in?

I can remember buying the Canadian park hopper passes a couple of years back and having them loaded onto our room keys when we checked in at BWV. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem at any of the resorts.
