So if I buy a 6 day park ticket can I add the park hopper to just one day while actually at WDW? or do I have to purchase that option when I book my package?

You can add it once you get there, but it's added for your whole ticket length (or whatever's left on your tickets). So if you do add it, it's best to do it earlier in your trip and actually take advantage of it. It'll cost the same whether you add it your first day or your last.

We've never not had the hopper. It's there for when and if you need it. It frees up everything for when kids say "I hate HS let's go back to MK this afternoon". It makes dining easier and hassle free. I think Disney should require it for resort guests even without FD.

Don't buy it ahead of time unless you're absolutely sure you'll use it. Wait and add it on when you decide. It's the same price either way.

And we've never had it, never needed it, never missed it! And saved about $250 each time without it!

Actually, I'm wrong....we did buy it on our first trip because so many people said it was a must. We never used it. Wasted $250 that time!

DH and I won't go without it, especially on shorter trips when we have different things (Wishes, Illum, Fant etc.) we want to do at night and don't necessarily want to spend the whole day in the same place. There was one longer trip with kids that we only used it once and I thought we could have saved the money. I think it depends on your touring style and plans. If you know you want to use it at least once, upgrade when you first get there so you have the option the whole trip. If not sure, you can wait and decide as you get into your vacation. We love the flexibility it gives us. (Never done all 4 parks in one day, but we have done 3 a few times!)

Park Hopper is an all or nothing option. It applies to an entire multi-day ticket, even if you buy it on the last day of use.

We have always gotten park hoppers. For this past trip we had purchased regular park tickets by mistake, fully intending to upgrade to hoppers when we got down to Disney World. But the first few days we were too tired to follow our commando plan and hop to the parks that were open late. Then we decided that it wasn't worth the additional ~$64 each to upgrade to hoppers when we were probably only going to use them one or two days. So we adjusted our plans to not hop. (We were there 9 days, so it wasn't like we missed anything)
