Apologies ahead of time because I know this has been covered before. We're planning a fall trip and are trying to do 3 days instead of 4. Don't ask because my answer will have something to do with "my boss":rotfl2:
Can I mix MYW and hoppers? Really we only need 2 full days and the third will be a hopper. Can we upgrade 1 day ticket or does it have to be 2 separate transactions?

Yes it is possible to use a one day hopper and a 2 day non-hopper, purchased separately (can both be done at the ticket window without having to go to the back of the line before doing the second).

If your first day is the hopping day you can buy just the 1 day hopper and, before the day is out, decide whether to just add 2 more days to it or to throw it out and buy a new 2 day ticket. One drawback of this method is, since you won't have 3 days worth of admission on hand prior to arrival, you won't be able to book 3 days worth of fastpasses prior to arrival.

If your plans change, note that adding a day to a 1 day hopper costs the difference between a 2 day hopper and a 1 day hopper, which is more than the difference between a 2 day base ticket and a 1 day base ticket. Once a hopper, always a hopper.

For more than 3 days, the cost of adding one more day to a hopper is the same as adding one more day to a base ticket which cost is somewhere around eleven dollars.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

All MYW tickets can be upgraded to add Park Hopping. Park Hopping is for the length of your ticket. Either you have it or you don't.

it doesn't seem to be much of a price difference for a one day PH and a two day non PH versus three day PHs. You can see ticket prices on this site. Look at the blue band at the top of the page. In the middle is a link to ticket pricing for an easy comparison.

I think you are saying you have a three day ticket, but want to buy a fourth day and that you plan to hop on the fourth day.

As the pp said, adding hopping is about $37 with tax, You either add it or you don't. ( you don't add it to just one day of your ticket, it is a flat rate price no matter how many days are on your ticket)

You CAN buy a one day hopper ticket, (completely separate form your three day ticket) but it would cost quite a bit less to convert your three day ticket into a four day ticket +hopping.

Buying a one day hopper ticket will cost about $137, whereas changing your three day base to a four day hopper should only cost $60.

I small correction. If you add PHing to a 1-day ticket it's $35+tax. If you add it to a multi day ticket it's $49+tax.

New for 2014. Hopping is priced differently for 1 day tickets ($43.), for 2 and 3 day tickets ($52.), and for 4 to 10 day tickets ($64.). (Prices include tax.) So although hopping is still a one time charge for tickets that do not undergo additional upgrades, adding the second or fourth day to a hopper will result in a slight extra "bump up" charge that you did not otherwise anticipate.

(That is, hopping is not grandfathered if you start off with a 1 day ticket.)

You can still add hopping and more days in one transaction.

It's really unclear what you're asking.

Do you already have tickets? If so, exactly what tickets do you have?

OK so because of mickeyluv'r I went back to the site and calculated myself.
We want to do 3 days not 4 so it would be 2 day base ticket and 1 day park hoper. Just as mickeyluv'r said a four day base ticket is less. For 4 day base it's 139 dollars cheaper than 2 day base and 1 day hoper
But let's not get carried away here we still haven't added the resort because we stay on site and will also be going to Universal this year and just to make things more interesting you never know what pins will be out for dinning or rooms that will totally put a wrench in our plans LOL

If you are only going for 3 days, a 4 day base ticket would not do you any good - you cannot use the extra day to hop to another park.

Unless rules have changed since last year you can do that. It's the first thing the cm told us when we checked in. Your tickets are 1 park one day so if you go to another park you just used 2 tickets. Correct me if I'm wrong or if I should call Disney for clarification??

What the CM told you was absolutely incorrect.

You cannot (and have never been able to) use 2 days from a multi-day ticket in one day. That is why they are referred to as "days" and not "entries."

The rule hasn't changed. It's always been the way Alesia described it.

If you look at WDW ticket page, it says "Visit any ONE theme park per day".

Isn't that how the tickets work at Universal if you by the 2 park ticket??? However, they have never worked that way at WDW. That is why they sell the park hopper option.

A 4 day ticket is not useful unless you will spend 4 days in the parks.

A 1 day hopper and a 2 day base ticket together cost a little less than a 3 day hopper.

But if you decide later to add a 4'th day, you will spend more money altogether if you started with the "1" and the "2" as opposed to starting out with the "3".

A 2-park ticket at Universal would be the equivalent of a Park Hopper.

Or if they decide to PH on more than one day.

Yes, as others have said. If you want two full days, plus one day of hopping then you would basically want a three day hopper pass.

You'll also need to update my pricing because I was not aware of the new upcharge for hopping...ARGH! Sorry to hear they are changing the hopping fee. That is now quite confusing.

So let's see - converting two day nonhopper to a three day hopper is $144.
Buying a one day hopper is $148. so actually the difference is an abysmal $4.

(The way ticket pricing works, there is a big price drop off on days four through ten. So it makes a big difference that you are only talking about two/three day tickets, not thee/four day tickets as I understood previously.)

sorry for the bad news.

LOL no bad news taken. Thanks for your help and Alesia and reddog as well. I got a better answer on trip advisor than the Disney site itself. CM was wrong we can't do that and would be denied access to the second park until the next day. I'm ok with this. We need a full day at HS and EC but really can do without a full day at MK and AK so that's really all I was getting at.
That being said it wouldn't stop us from taking a vacation it's just this year our kids really want to go to Universal so we are trying to figure out how to make this all happen in a 5 day window. If it turns out to be a better deal to make our Disney tickets park hoppers then we'll go that route.
And there hasn't been any pins issue yet for the secret time frame we are planning which will probably change all our plans. Go ahead Disney, tempt me with a Dole Whip plan!

Okay. Now I'm confused even though I thought I understood hoppers. I understood the price for adding the "hopper option" was the name no matter how many days the ticket was for. Is this no longer true in 2014?

More specifically, I have purchased 7 day tickets without hopping. Due to the way FP+ works, I am thinking we will NOT be hopping this trip. However, in the back of my mind I am thinking that if we do choose to hop, I would just need to stop at Guest Services and add hopping at that point. I thought it would be a single charge of about $40 per ticket no matter when during my trip I decided to add hopping? Is this no longer true?

Let's say I add it on the first day of our 7 days in the park. How much per ticket?

Let's say I wait until Day 6 to add hopping. How much per ticket?

THANKS so much!
