Park hopper question

We're thinking of doing a trip where we stay offsite for 2 days and onsite for 7. Can we get a 9 day park hopper or do we have to do a 2 and 7day? Our keys have been our tickets when we've stayed the last 2 times. How would that change?

You can get a nine day hopper. You'd just have to carry your ticket media as well as a room key (provided you're staying off-site first). If you're staying on-site first, you can have the 9 day tickets put on the room key, and the park access portion of the ticket/key would still be active after you check out.
